So my bed is right under my carbon monoxide alarm which is where I like to do most of my vaping but ever since I stepped up from a ego style e-cig to a box mod, I've set off the alarm about 4 times now. With the ego I could sit right under the alarm and drag on it continuously and nothing ever happened. Now I vape around 8-9 watts and just a few puffs will make the alarm sound. I've been safe with vaping with my fan on a low setting but I don't like how the vapor swirls around all crazy everywhere. I like my clouds and often like to do smoke tricks too which I can't get if then fan is going.
I don't really want to get involved with campus police or anything, even so much as asking them to come check out the alarm, because e-cigs specifically violate dorm conduct code and I have a ton of gear laying around...and other such things I don't want them seeing :p
Would it be a bad idea to put a t-shirt or towel or something over the detector? We have dorm checks once or twice a semester but we get a heads up beforehand so I'm not worried about that.
I need to figure this out because the alarm is very loud and piercing on the ears, and my room mate (who is not okay with me vaping) was not happy about the alarm going off a 3AM once and I try to respect her wishes.
The alarm has never gone off under any other circumstances so I'm positive that it's because of the vapor. I only know a couple other people that vape in the dorms but the are using less powerful devices and haven't had this problem.

I live in a dorm as well and I blow fat clouds! I dont know how small your room is but mines not that big. but i sit on my couch which is on the other side of the room from the smoke detector. I put a small circle fan on a box (for me i have a sink so i put it on that) blowing away from it (do not face it toward the smoke alarm!!). I also have the window wide open and i also bought a window fan to such out air. With the window open all the way (i get a small breeze through the room) and small fan going i have good ventilation so as long as im not chain vaping clouds for a long time ill be fine.

***To sum up, ventilation is key*** +Window fan (pulling air out) and a small fan inside the room to blow it toward the window fan+
