Worked ok. The fact that it had magnetized side panels worked very much in my favor.. looks ok to me, works well. I thought at first I would need to drill both the magnet plate and the back plate. I might have gotten an extra mm out of it, but it wasn’t needed. I did manage to lose all six screws for the backplate (argh). The simple soolution is don’t remove the actual backplate at all, so no t4 torx bit needed. Just a 1” step drill. I didn’t even need to epoxy it in. Decent electric tape (3m super 33) was enough so it’s not even permanent for the AirTag

So I tried to glue it anyway and that may not be a good idea. The tolerances on the AirTag battery compartment are extremely tight and not only is the spring strong, but the plastic may have to deform a bit. It is possible (usually) with just your fingers, but I suspect someone will come out with a tool.

UPDATE: I find the tape stretches enough to annoy me in about a week. Replacing it is totally doable and a roll of super33 may outlast the battery of the AirTag, but I’m trying scotch poster putty now. It seems more stable. I put a layer of toilet paper over the stuff after I applied it to make it less stick. I might not have needed to and I can’t even see the stuff now but it is less sticky.

thats exactly what I’m hoping to avoid. JBWeld is also a screaming pita to sand. I made the mistake of filling a motorcycle tank dent with it. Boy did that suck. Gonna try something alcohol soluble before i toss in the towel and epoxy it (JBweld is metal filled epoxy btw) spirit gum or Barge cement or something.
