WHO DEY NATION
So I am on a business trip in Madison, WI. I am staying in a hotel (a Hilton to be exact) and I was just hanging out in my room, watching TV, and doing a bit of vaping in my boxers. Then it happened.... the fire alarm went off. I about pooped my pants it caught me so off guard. I ran down to the lobby to explain what happened when the fire department showed up and started asking questions. When they found out that my room was the one that tripped the alarm, they instantly started treating me like a criminal. You would have thought I just murdered their first born child.

Eventually I got the "you shouldn't smoke inside, it's against the law" lecture from one of the firefighters and when I told him I didn't realize it was an issue in a private room where I'm not actually smoking, he went off on me. He told me that regardless of what it is, any type of "smoking" is against the law and that I should have just told someone I was smoking and it would have saved everyone from a headache. He just could not comprehend why I was confused as to why the alarm went off when there was no smoke present. He got my name, phone number, and date of birth from me right before he left, not sure what that was about. The hotel attendant was much more understanding, to whom I apologized profusely for the chaos I caused. She said it's not the first time it has happened and that she is going to talk to the building manager about some new signs addressing the issue of vaping in the rooms.

After doing some research on my own, I found a few things to be true.

1. Smoke alarms arent necessarily built to only detect smoke. Some can be set off by steam, dust, or any type of aerosol.
2. Dane County, WI just recently (Jan 2015) enacted a ban on vaping indoors and that apparently applies to private hotel rooms as well.
3. Public fire alarms are really fracking loud!!!

Be sure to do a bit of research on local vape laws when you travel, it could save you some trouble and legal issues. Hopefully this doesn't come back to bite me in the ...., it was an honest mistake and had I known, I wouldn't have vaped inside in the first place.

Just thought I would share my story so others may learn from my stupid mistake. Save yourself the embarrassment and look up the laws, ask an employee about rules involving vaping, and for the love of God and all that is holy, don't vape near a smoke detector.

This isn't the first time it's been mentioned in hotel rooms, it should've been well known or at least vape in the bathroom like most people do.
Glad the hotel was more understanding about the situation though unlike the firefighters who all seem to have a one track mind anyways. Found it interesting about the ban though indoors, first I've heard of that.
Haha, I had to laugh at #3, I've only heard it once and don't wish to hear it again.

Part of a travellers vape kit should include plastic or vinyl shower caps. These are placed over the detector so you can vape in a nonsmoking room.

Bear in mind, that could be viewed as disabling the smoke detector and can result in rather large fines if caught doing so.
What? You mean thats not a shower cap holder officer? I thought it was kinda odd they placed it on the ceiling and I had to use a chair to reach it. In fact I was going to complain to the management they should relocate these newfangled shower cap holders!
For sure don't forget to remove it when you leave the room or before the maid comes in.

Great idea. Most hotels I've been to even give you one for free with the shampoo, soap, etc.

I agree! I used this method to block the detector in my motorhome. Still, needing the detector, I have since moved it to an area to provide better detection of other gasses.

This "tip" assumes you will not forget to remove the cap before guests or house cleaners arrive or when you check out. Not sure which would be worse, a fine for the cap or maybe having to pay costs for expenses caused due to false alarm. At any rate, be a responsible vapor

Hotel room vaping = stealth vaping. Leave the cloud chasing for when you are outside or at home and don't think that using one of the new sub-ohm tanks isn't cloud chasing because it is.

When I am in a hotel room I go to a standard good ol' KPT Mini 2 on a Vamo or some other Evod connection device and then either stealth vape or vape near the window if it opens.

For those that don't know how to stealth vape you take a drag, hold it in, inhale again on top of it, hold that in, inhale again and slowly exhale. There will either be no vapor at all or very minimal.

*lol* yeah I know you did ..first you say it ..then you do it.

that one would be on them..I'm not "smoking" ..just tell 'em you were a lil heavy handed on the hair spray..and vape on!

the ones in our house go off "just because" heat from the burners/grill, a bunch of vaping friends/family over..etc.

the neighbors know supper's almost ready when they hear the alarms *lol* after their first worried dash to the house when we first moved in.

I would've admitted NOTHING! They would've had to prove I was 'smoking' especially since the room didn't smell like cigarette smoke which lingers for hours! The smell from your vape could've been anything.....lotion, shampoo, etc etc. Very hard to prove someone was vaping unless there are witnesses. :p

I visit hotels frequently... the first thing I do is set up the ironing board and pull out the next days clothes. The iron is then placed on the board.... I have twice in two different cities (different chains) set off the alarm (ok one was not an accident but totally different story other to say that I don't deal well with rude front desk people). Both instances I appeared to be livid that the iron set off the alarm and that it was a complete inconvenience... I do like the shower cap idea btw!

I'm not one to be dishonest, I just explained that I had no idea that it was an issue and suggested that due to the increased popularity of vaping, that a warning sign on the front desk would be a good idea. I said that if I had known it was an issue, I gladly would have stepped outside. They agreed with me that I was not smoking and that they were adamant about discussing the sign idea with the GM today. Sometimes it pays to be honest.... I just hope this is one of those times. I will let yall know if I get hit with any fines (Lord knows I will fight them tooth and nail..)

#1 their hotel ... their rules. If you don't like their rules ... stay somewhere else.

#2 if your vaping is setting off fire alarms ... that's your fault.
Well that's just ignorant. There was at no time anything stating it was "against the rules" and I had no idea that it would set off a fire alarm seeing as how there's no smoke involved. If you'd be so kind and go back to bed, try and get up on the right side next time. ;)
