I was wondering what the best way to priming a new bvc coil is? I have tried putting drops of liquid directly onto the cotton and letting it sit for about 20 minutes or so, but all that seems to do is flood the coil terribly. Any suggestions?

Easiest way, hook a piece of wire in the coil head air inlet/positive pin, open bottle of juice, hang coil head on juice bottle lip by the attached wire, let sit for a few minutes, remove coil from bottle, remove wire, blow out excess juice if need to, install, fill tank, assemble tank, attach to mod, go about your happy day.

There are many ways to skin a cat.
Yes, if you want to vape it ASAP you should prime it.
You can put it in 'dry' and prime it by sucking juice through or you can follow @Gramdogg advice with working around the juice holes. I've been using BVC since day one using this method and have 100% success. I tend to drop 2 drips directly onto the mesh (in addition) with it tilted to minimize liquid down the very middle.

Like has been said there are several different methods folks use.
None of them right or wrong, different people have different experiences/methods that work for best them.

First make sure you're using authentic aspire nautilus BVC replacement atomizer heads. Check the scratch off security code on the box.
If the code has been checked even once before you did they are counterfeit. Each security code is unique to each box / only one box.

Before installing head into base I tilt the head slightly & drip drops directly on top of the screen & allow time for liquid to soak in. Depending on size of drops it takes 5-10. I'm careful not to get any down the center of the coil. If you do just gently blow it out.
I keep rotating the head & putting drops on the screen until the wicking material is fully saturated. The material in the wicking holes in body turns translucent & a little may seep out.
One drop on the o ring / gasket that seals the head to base for lube spread around on the seal with finger, helps prevent bunching up/displacing/damaging the seal.
Just me, I install the head tight into the base.
