A friend of mine recently gave me one of his old box mods with a charger but no batteries. Its the one from madvapes : Variable Voltage Box Mod

I'm having a hard time selecting the batteries to use. Everyone I've asked has said to use IMR high drain batteries with high amp limits. I dont plan on exceeding 3 amps , do I really need the high drain batteries? I was planning on buying Li-ion batteries with pcb proection. I've heard horror storries of unprotected batteries venting, catching fire or even exploding. Anyone car to share some insight and what you would use with this mod? Thanks.

I would use the IMR batteries. They are not protected but they will not explode, they will vent, giving you plenty of time to feel the heat and toss the mod. Protected batteries are better suited for mechanical mods which have no built in protection but you can use IMRs in those too. You can add extra protection with a shortstop.
