Got jury duty coming up. Anyone have trouble getting their Prodigy in an out of a courthouse (security screening) -- I'm sure this is mostly a parallel discussion to other threads I've seen with respect to airports, but I'm not sure which screeners are more .....

I don't plan to vape in the courthouse, I just don't want to have to trek back to the car several blocks away during the limited break time afforded.

Just finished Jury Duty about 3 weeks ago. I vaped outside the building and inside the jury assembly room with blessings from the personnel that was in charge of all of us. I did not vape in the court room as I just didn't think that was appropriate.

Thanks for the reply Michele. That gives me some confidence that it wouldn't be confiscated at the security checkpoint. Were you really proactive in addressing what it was before it raised suspicion?

I'm probably just being paranoid, but who wouldn't be possessive of their Prodigy? :)

I use a 510. I came through the check point on the first day with my purse and had my PV in a side pocket with a small case of 8-10 carts in it. No problem there. After the first day, I chose not to carry my purse and only had my lunch bag with me. I don't know if you've been on jury duty before, but it involves a lot of sitting around and waiting. So honestly most of the time I went outside to stretch my legs and vaped outside--but, there were times during the two weeks that we were required to stay in the assembly room. The first time that happened, I went up to the office (located inside the assembly room) as spoke with one of the personnel there. I showed her the PV, assured her that nothing was "lit up" and she was fine with it.

Also, in the lobby there was a small coffee stand, and after about 3 days of purchasing my morning latte, the barista at the stand asked me about what I had in my teeth (as I was getting money out of my wallet) !! I ended up sharing my "vaping testamonial" with about 5 people by the time I went back into the assembly room.

EDIT--ADD: Several times I went through the security check point with only my PV and placed it in the little tray you gentlemen usually put your wallet and keys. No problems there either.

every courthouse will be different though, so your best bet is to call in advance and check (as a knitter this comes up a lot on knitting forums as to whether people can take their knitting in, the differences between court houses is amazing)

Absolutely. I looked at it as a win/win situation. If they allowed me to vape inside--yeah for me! If they didn't--that was ok as well. I wanted to put forth our best "vaping face" I could.

Every place is different. I don't vape everywhere I want. I vape where I feel it's appropriate. The court room--no. The lobby of the court house--no. Elevators--no. A waiting room? yes--if they agreed.

I don't vape in people houses without their permission--and in my opinion, peoples places of work is the same as their house.

What's wrong with vaping in an elevator? lol

I had jury duty and took my 510 and 901. Didn't have the prodigy yet or you can bet I would have tried! :D

Had them both in my purse and a case with extra attys, bats and juice. They did stop the scanner to look closely at what was in my purse the first two times, then after that no 2nd looks. It's a fairly small courthouse with not a lot of in and out traffic so I expected the extra scrutiny.

I mostly vaped outside and then in the bathroom took a couple hits on shorter breaks.

It was weird, one woman was outside smoking an analog with an obviously 'well used' rubber glove on. It was all brown and discolored from the smoking. After she put out her smoke she took her glove off and put it in her pocket. She was on her cell phone the whole time or I would have told her about PVs and how she wouldn't need that glove anymore!

Funny, I kept thinking about how much her pocket probably smelled. Save her fingers, reek from your pocket!

Good luck with your jury duty! Let us know if they let the Prodigy through...

Well technically nothing. But I've smoked analogs for almost 30 years and still cannot be in a small space with someone smoking or vaping--cars, elevators, some bathrooms, etc... It just makes me feel claustrophobic. I choose to not vape because, it's only a few seconds ride. I wouldn't want to make anyone else feel like that. ;)

EDIT: I smoked in my car--but absolutely had to have the window down--regardless of weather! lol

I haven't updated the results of this because I switched courthouses (so they sent me a new summons) out of convenience. New jury duty date is Oct 27th -- decided I will take the Prodigy. I will certainly update on the experience. I suppose it helps immensely that SB400 was vetoed. :D
i think i would opt to carry something smaller than what might appear to some like a damn pipe bomb with a fuse sticking out. the smaller 510/801/901 appears more penlike than the prodigy. i wouldnt risk taking mine and having if confiscated and possibly never returned. I personlly know the bossier city marshall and when you go into his office he has a HUGE glass case with all of the stuff that has been taken from people and never returned. but if you are a gambling man give it a shot.

I would think as long as you are up front about what it is then there should be no problem. I took a flight recently and had no trouble with airport security. I put it in that little tray and I was asked what is that a flashlight? I told them what it was and they just said Have a good day sir. So I would take the atty off and let them know what it is first. That way if they have a problem with it you could always take it back to your car. It's when you are being sneaky they could freak out.

Ok so I had Jury Duty yesterday. I have to admit, I didn't have a lot of balls in this situation, so I did two things.

1. I took the batteries out, so I had two sets of batteries in my prodigy carry case (https://emberapp.com/mgrimes/images/prodigy-case/)

2. I only carried one 6ml bottle, and i took it out of the case and put it in my pocket so it'd just blend in with my keys and rewetting drops for my contact lenses.

That said, I didn't have to say anything, I just put the case and loose pocket items in the bin that went through the machine, smiled at the sheriff as i walked through the metal detector and collected it on the other side.

I didn't vape in the completely full jury lounge as I feared people would be sensitive about it due to ignorance. :)

Instead I went out into the outdoor smoking area at the center of the courthouse where all the stinky analog smokers were. Sat WAYYYY away from them... upwind.. and went to town. No one asked me about the device surprisingly.

I think I can go through this experience with considerably more confidence next time. Thanks for all the pointers from everyone!
