I will definitely try rebuilding some of his coils! Should I be doing this with a brand new stock coil? Or a burnt out one? What's the difference between the mesh, nano coil, etc? So many different types!

Don't mess with SS Mesh yet, too much hassle.

Nano Coil = wire wrapped around 1mm.
Micro Coil = wire wrapped around 2mm. (I do around 8 wraps for 1.8 ohms)

Just approximate.

Start with a burnt out coil, and once you've done a few successfully, then just make up a bunch of coils.

Thanks. Is the coil acting as an inductor? It's not a solenoid or a transformer correct? I could be completely wrong. Are you using a general multimeter to check?

Not inductor, resistor (resistive load), (think electric heater).

Ya you can use DMM to test for resistance/shorts, best done after coil is installed in the head.

Some of the better mods, like my Provari, have a built in safety for short circuit protection.

And also can read ohms of coil/head, but you must have the wick wet or it will burn the cotton.

Don't know if someone already mentioned this or not, but to the OP: If you feel like this is something your boyfriend is going to stick with, at some point you should look into just getting an RBA. Having used the Protank 2 and RBAs like a Kayfun, Russian 91%, etc the difference in quality between the two (taste, vapor production, tank size, etc) is substantial...and if you're going to the trouble to rebuild PT2 coils, I have to imagine it's easier on an atty that's made for rebuildable coils.
