Hello and welcome back for another review. Today I will be taking a look at the Innokin Coolfire Z80 NEX kit that was sent to me by Innokin in order to provide you with a fair and honest review. The Coolfire Z80 NEX mod has a maximum output of 80 watts and is adjustable in .5 watt increments. It has a simple yet informative interface and is made of zinc alloy with a leather like back. The adjustment buttons are on the side instead of front which is a little different design than I’ve seen from Innokin before and has a physical lock switch. The kit includes the Zenith Nex tank which can be used for both MTL and RDL. The NEX tank has a liquid capacity of 5ml and makes use of the Innokin Z coils that we all know and love. Kudos to Innokin for sticking with the Z coils instead of coming out with a new line of coils.

    INITIAL THOUGHTS:

As usual, Innokin has done a nice job with the packaging on this kit. On the white front of the box is the Innokin name at the top with a blue background, The Coolfire Z80 NEX name in black and a nice color picture of the device contained inside. The back of the box has the usual list of contents, manufacturer information, and authenticity code.

Once opened, the Z80 mod is visible with the tank sitting above it in the same white foam insert. There is a pull tab on the top edge of the foam insert which can be pulled to expose the spare glass and an envelope containing the spare .3 ohm coil, drip tip, charge cable, user manual, and tank accessories.

The left side of the Coolfire has the Innokin name stamped into the metal frame. The right side of the Coolfire has the + and – buttons which is different from anything I’ve seen from Innokin. I personally am glad that they didn’t go with the fire bar like they have used on several of their mods. The leather like wrap on the back of the mod has raised letters indicating the Z80 NEX model name.

The front of the mod has the round slightly protruding fire button on top. Below that is the display screen which shows a W for wattage mode, battery level indicator, set wattage, length of time of current puff, coil resistance, puff counter, and output voltage while firing. So the display gives you what I would consider all of the basic needed information. Below the display is a manual lock switch. When the switch is moved then the display shows either a lock or unlock symbol on the display. This switch completely locks the entire device from firing or being adjusted. The button/menu operation is as follows.

    • Press the fire button 3X to turn the mod on/off
    • Press the + or – button to adjust the wattage in .5 watt increments
    • Press and hold the fire button and the – button to access the secondary menu where you will see the options of Timeout, Cutoff, Device ID, and Exit.

The Coolfire uses a single 18650 battery to deliver the maximum output of 80 watts. The battery is loaded through the bottom of the mod via a threaded battery cap with a flip up lever to assist in keeping a grip on the cap. There are four battery venting holes in the cap which is a good safety feature. The battery polarity is marked inside the opening with a large red + symbol on a white background. No confusion there on how to load the battery.

The top of the mod has the 510 connection plate with slots cut into it. The center pin is plated and spring loaded to make a good electrical connection with the tank.

As I do with any new tank, I disassembled the NEX tank and gave it a good cleaning. I felt rather stupid when I realized that along with the tank parts, I accidentally dropped the pre-installed .8 ohm Z coil in the soapy water with the tank parts. Thankfully, Innokin was nice enough to include an extra of both the .8 ohm and .3 ohm coils.

The NEX tank has a liquid capacity of 5ml and is compatible with all Innokin Z coils. I think that about everyone out there has either used or at least heard of the Z coils. I think it’s great that Innokin decided to stick with the Z coils on this new tank. They are tried and true.

The NEX tank makes use of a top fill that they are calling the Top Sync System via a rubber plug that is exposed by turning the top airflow control ring all the way to one side. The plug doesn’t really rotate out of the way like it does on some pod devices. This fill design reminds me very much of another tank that I’ve reviewed before by another company but won’t go into detail.

The airflow adjustment allows the user to go from a very tight MTL to an RDL when opened fully. The tank comes with the .8 ohm coil installed along with the MTL drip tip but also included is an RDL drip tip and a .3 ohm Z coil. The airflow opening has two small holes and a wider slot opening.

The bottom of the tank has the Platform Series name printed on it as well as the P. Busardo and Vaping Greek names. The top of the tank has a white circle on it with the NEX name. The top cap is not removable but the drip tip is interchangeable.

    FINAL THOUGHTS:

It has been a pleasure testing the Innokin Coolfire Z80 NEX kit. The mod worked flawlessly during my time testing it. I very much like the manual lock switch on the front which makes it easy to lock the device before putting it in a pocket or bag. I also like that Innokin switched things up by placing the adjustment buttons on the side of the mod. I am quite used to the style of threaded battery cap that is used on the Z80 and like that the flip up lever has a bit of stiffness to it so it doesn’t collapse while you are trying to thread or unthread it. I’ve run into other devices where the lever flips down when you are trying to turn it.

The NEX tank is much like the previous Zenith tanks as far as using the Z coils and having different tips for MTL and RDL. I personally am not a huge fan of using the rubber plug for filling on a tank. Each time you need to fill then you have to turn the airflow ring then have to turn the ring back to try to adjust the airflow back to where you had it originally. Other than that the tank works well.

I started with the .8 ohm Z coil and filled the tank with a NET tobacco mix that I have used for a long time. I felt that the coil did a very good job of delivering the proper flavor. I’m not at all surprised as I’ve used the Z coils before and they perform well. I had about 500 puffs on this coil and it was still going strong when I switched to the .3 coil to test it for this review.

Next up was the .3 ohm coil which I am a fan of and have a pretty decent stockpile of in my collection. I’m not sure exactly why but when I put the first .3 ohm coil in, the vape just didn’t seem right but I figured the coil just needed broken in. I was wrong. The next morning the tank had flooded and there was no visible liquid in the tank. There was no liquid on the mod but when I removed the tank and turned it over, the liquid dumped out the tip. I’m very familiar with using Z coils across different tanks and devices but I can only guess that somehow I didn’t get the coil inserted correctly. I did go ahead and clean the tank and inserted the spare .3 ohm coil that Innokin was nice enough to send along with the kit and had zero problems after that. I’ve used the .3 ohm Z coils before and very much like them. They deliver good flavor and vapor and seem to last a good amount of time. I tend to like to run them on the lower end of 30-32 watts with the airflow choked down a little for a slightly tight RDL.

I’d like to thank Innokin and Alisa for sending the Innokin Coolfire Z80 NEX Kit for this review. As usual it has been a pleasure to review an Innokin product. Thanks also to the readers for taking the time to read my review. Below is a link to the website for your viewing pleasure.

Good review, but I'm not fond of the battery cap. Reminds me of the Aegis solo mod, which I don't like.
I know they had some issues with the aegis cap but the one on this one works better and others like the dotbox 100 work well.
