I'm curious, I have tried to research my particular question to no avail

I recently ordered the Joye 510.

When I read about battery life I become confused.

Is it ~2-3hrs of USAGE?

or is it ~2-3hrs from the moment I unplug it?

For example, if I unplug the e-cig at 6 a.m but don't use it till 9 a.m can I expect it to be drained? Or will it be primed and ready to give me ~2-3hrs of vaping time throughout the day?

I don't log 2-3 hours of smoking analogs a day, so I'm hoping I'd actually be able to get a full day off one battery. I'm not going to be sitting around vapping just to vap, just a few puffs when I feel the need which is about 1-2 cigs every 2hrs.

You will probably get @1-2 hours of usage (vaping time) off of a regular 510 battery. This will decrease over the lifetime of the battery. You cannot compare smoking time to vaping time as you WILL vape more than you smoked. You will not get a full day off of one battery, that I can almost guarantee. You can get a PCC to carry with 2 batteries, but for about the same price, you can get a bigger battery (ego) and not worry about it.

I don't know about everyone else but.....
I smoked 10 to 12 cigs per day. In a 16-18 hour day that is equal to about 1 every 1.6-8 hours. I started vaping on an SLB810 and used approx. 3 mil / day. I was running three batteries - one on the charger, one for backup, and one for use. By the end of the week I was thinking about buying another charger to keep up.

Just a warning. Buy three batteries and extra attys. If you don't use the batterys that much then keep one for a spare. I finally went to the 14500 nico stick with three batts in rotation and it seems to get me by. I only need two for the charge time but it is nice to keep one in your pocket for a spare when you find yourself away from home for a time. I also keep a spare atomizer around in case of emergency. They always seem to fail when you least expect it. Luck.

An e-Cig is just like a flash light. If you don't use it, the batteries will last all most forever. The 2-3 hours rating is more like tiempo said, 1-2 hours. So if you are a vaper, one battery might last you all day.

I think it is best to have 3 batteries and to constantly rotate them. That way you can use one, have one on the charger and have one that has a fresh charge.

As already mentioned, it is 2-3 hours or so (depending on how much you vape) of use. I vape pretty steady and I used to get about 2 hours or a little less out of each fully-charged Joye 510 battery.

One thing good to know is that how long a battery will "last" depends on its capacity which is measured in mA (milliamps). For example, a standard 510 battery is rated at (I think) 170 mA. A 510 "Mega" battery (I think) is rated at 380 mA which is more than 50% more capacity and therefore will theoretically last you at least twice as long as a standard battery.

I have made a few mods and have used #14500 protected batteries which have a capacity of 900 mA which would last me about 8 hours on a full charge with fairly steady vaping (all my vaping is at 3.7 volts). I now make and use my mods to hold the #18650 battery which is rated at 2400 mA. A fully charged 18650 battery will last me about 2 full days of vaping.

Oh, just as an FYI, the battery #'s I mentioned like the 14500 and 18650 are derived from the actual battery dimensions in millimeters. For example, the 14500 battery is 14 millimeters wide and 50 millimeters long (usually add a couple of mm to the length if they are protected batteries). An 18650 battery is 18 mm wide and 65 mm long.

For me it is 2hrs when I use them in even though I have had them off the charger all day. I vape heavily so 2 hours is about max for me before I switch batteries. From experience I would say always carry two batteries and enough e-juice so that you have it with you and don't run out. Just remember that being over prepared is a must since you can't just run to the store when you are out of batteries and away from home and you feel a craving coming on. A PCC isn't a bad idea if you are out all day or staying over night somewhere so you can always have a battery charging.

I found that the stock 510 batteries just would not cut it for me.. I was always charging batteries... I upgraded to the BB from Altsmoke that uses the 14500 battery.. I bought 4 of these batteries with the BB and problem solved.. The 14500's i bought with the BB in Nov. are still working great....

for the 510 it is more like 30 mins (I might be exaggerating, but not by much!) I started modding after about week 2 so I didn't have to .... with pcc's and constant charging. After I found the ECF I learned a lot more people got that idea waaaayyyyy before me! lol. Get a chuck with a 18650 battery and enjoy 2-3 DAYS on a charge and never worry about the battery life again.

The type of batteries in e-cigs are what is called lithium ion, or li-ion for short. Unlike all previous battery types li-ions are known for holding their charge over a long period of time. In battery-speak, they have a very low "self-discharge" rate. So you could store your battery in a drawer for several months and still have most of the charge left in the battery.

Trying to determine actual usage time is futile imo, because there are simply too many variables. Two people can vape for an hour and one battery will be totally dead. One may be taking 4-5 second drags every minute and the other may be chain vaping with 8-10 second drags. So its almost impossible to determine an average usage time.

That's why everyone here recommends extra batteries, pcc's, or moving to a larger model (eGo/Riva/Tornado et al).

Thank you all for your responses.

I appreciate the detail and the thoroughness of each response.

My question has been answered.

I did buy the regular batteries, which I believe I will use often, although like I said, I will not be vaping very often, just a few times a day. Hopefully 2 batteries gets me where I want to go.

I did not buy the mega batteries due to awkwardness that I perceived in the size.

Maybe it would be a good idea to have one as a "just in case" battery.

Again, Thank you.
