I've been vaping for about three months now... In the last month, I've noticed that it seems as though every flavor tastes just terrible... Meaning a total flavor experience so far of about one hundred flavors, with twenty-one that I currently still have on had right now (as some were thrown or given away right after I bought them if I genuinely didn't like the flavor). Anyway, this is different than a typical dislike for certain flavors... It tastes as though all of my flavors are chemical-y, or soap flavored. There's also a very obtrusive smell if I blow any vapor out of my nose instead of my mouth. Most flavors are great when I first get them, but within 24-72 hours, I can't stand them anymore and am fervently changing the tank in an effort to find something I can stand. I have checked my equipment and my coils are good, my batteries are charged and the voltage is not set so low as to not produce vapor, nor the opposite - it's not burning the fluid either. (I'm using an Innokin iTaste CLK, and an Innokin iTaste CLK 1280 with a 16D plastic clearomizer from Innokin for the most part, but also use two Kanger EVOD batteries paired with Protank 2 Minis regularly as backup... So that's four different units in total that get used regularly).

I have I have heard of something called, "vapor's tongue," in which regular vapors temporarily lose their ability to taste flavor. Is this the same thing as what I'm describing? I can certainly say flavorful flavors don't taste like much more than soap and chemicals anymore these days. I've been having trouble finding, "all day flavors," from the beginning though... I do have one though, and this flavor hasn't started to taste nasty either, however it's a pretty dull flavor these days even though it's not offensive (it's Guava 12mg, two extra shots, 50/50 PG/VG from MBV). I'm actually almost done with a 236ml bottle I've been working on now for a couple of months - I bought some other big bottles but had to toss them because of this flavor-hate thing that's been going on - those were Cantaloupe with three shots, Cheesecake with two shots, and Strawberry with no extra shots from MBV. The ironic thing is that I liked them when I first sampled them in 15ml bottles.

Oh yeah, I've also noticed that any sort of citrus flavor is overwhelming and burns my throat and tongue, i.e. rainbow sherbet, orange peach, l'orange dreamsicle, etc. I've really not enjoyed citrus from the beginning however and have never bought any citrus flavors period however, Well, there's one... L'orange Dreamsicle is actually better now (than when I got it), and is one of the only few all day vapes I'm comfortable with... (Totaling: Guava and Blue Moo from MBV and L'orange Dreamsicle from Baus/VapingMe.com) Basically, when I got it, which was the first flavor I ever tried, the orange note was so sugary and overwhelming that it was disgusting - like an orange pop with spoonfuls of white sugar added, no cream flavor at all. It's been three months and I decided to try it again and since it's steeped, it actually tastes proper to its name and is a really great flavor and now a favorite of mine.

This brings me to steeping though - I've noticed a LOT of flavors taste really bad to me after they've steeped, even if I liked them when they were fresh. Is that just a matter of personal preference? For example, whipped cream, sweet cream and french vanilla taste awful now that they're steeped all the way to dark, dark brown color - although honestly the whipped cream never tasted good to begin with. I'm just kind of confused with all this... I'm trying some other companies this month instead of MBV - Giant Vapes, Bionic, and Ahlusion. Maybe that will make a difference, I hope.

Could be a version of vapers tongue or it could be your sense of taste is coming back strong after years of smoking so you are picking up things you didn't before. Juice is a major evolution. I don't vape anything i used to during the first 3 months. But I have plenty that I've been enjoying for 6 months straight. Where i started and where i am today are 2 totally different places. Many folks experience the same.

I just recently placed an order with Ahlusion and I'm pretty thrilled with their flavors. Pretty amazing stuff.

The biggest money waster in this hobby is juice. I've given and thrown away several hundred $+ but it's been a while so I think I have it figure out. You just have to pay your dues and order small until you lock it in.

Oh yes, this is definitely a hobby! And, most hobbies cost money :p I've already spent hundreds myself on upgrading my gear and loads of different flavors. It's alright though in my book because I'd totally rather be enjoying this than ever smoking cigarettes again. Everything about this is fun, truly - the community, all the interesting things one can buy, getting your pulmonary health back... And, I was indeed a 30-cigarette-a-day smoker for almost fifteen years, so, even though it's been three months, my sense of taste probably is still changing and healing. I don't ever cough or cough up mucus anymore though at this point - that's a wonderful perk. I might add that I had my tonsils removed about five weeks ago - my throat is healed, but it still may be contributing to this weird taste thing...

You may want to get some BioTene to upgrade your oral care. It's an over-the-counter antiseptic that dentists oral hygeinists often recommend. I've read that it helps with vaper's tongue.

drink plenty of fluids, rotate different flavors, change coils/tanks or clean your existing tanks using denture cleaner, send me muneh and pudding, try to cleans your palette with salted crackers or ginger, rinse with drymouth fluid (like Biotene)...and of course, just try taking a break for a short bit to let your tastes resettle.

it all sounds like vaper's tongue, nuthin too serious.

This is a promising sign that you've decided to be done with smokes.
You say this started about a month ago and that you had your tonsils out 5 weeks ago, did you have this issue before that? Are you having similar issues with foods or drinks.

A quick googling of "taste changes after tonsillectomy" shows this is not uncommon. You may discuss this with your oral surgeon.

You didn't mention? Are all these juices from the same vendor? If so, might try a few juices from a different vendor?

The soap thing rang a bell for me - too strong on flavor, needs steeping time, or *your* self does not like those chemicals that vendor is using.

This is a great question. I've noticed that many vendors have an underlying "base" they use that is similar even among completely different flavors.

Certainly vape tongue or fatigue could be at play although the fact that you have been changing flavors so much should help mitigate that--you're not overloading your sense of taste with any one flavor. I experienced it early on for about a weekend and my flavors didn't taste bad--I could hardly taste them at all.
I tried many suggested remedies (pickle juice, mouth wash, tongue brushing) and can't really say any worked effectively. Keeping hydrated may be the best
prevention.

I would also ask did you have this issue with the first flavor you were vaping? What was it's PG/VG ratio.

Understanding that flavor is a personal thing some suggestions:

1) Try different PG/VG ratios. Since you complain of chemically taste--higher VG may knock that back, as it's thicker, more syrupy.
2) Try different vendors
and as a general rule:
3) Reconsider throwing out a flavor so soon after you buy it. I can't tell you how many times I've bought a flavor I liked in the store (or even online & untasted) only to try it at home and have a "what the hell was I thinking?" moment. On coming back to them a week or more later--I often find them really good.
If I still don't like it I see if I can mix it with some other flavor.

Yep, so far I've bought everything from MBV, although my first flavor was from Baus/VapingMe.com. The Baus flavor I hated, but now that it's steeped for three months, I like it and it's one of my favorites. When I first tried flavors from MBV, I liked them all, for the most part, and Cheesecake quickly became my favorite. I can't stand Cheesecake anymore for whatever strange reason. I have tried the flavors on MBV's site from the company called Gwar, and liked those quite a lot and much better. I'm currently trying some flavors from Bionic, Ahlusion and GreatVapes, but none have arrived in the mail yet...

how often do you change coils? some flavors mix together in the wick and coil and can get funky

I change the coils often; sometimes I wonder if I'm changing them too often and wasting them. I'd say, five or six coils per month. I always change them when the weird burnt taste occurs, but also when switching flavors where I don't want a flavor residue mixed in with the new flavor - however, I've noticed that just putting the coil under running water for a minute or two tends to clean out the old flavor without having to get a new coil. I also have two tanks - one for fruit and one for baked goods flavors so that the two flavor categories don't mix and mess each other up.

I'm also at about 3 months coming from 30+ a day for 45 years. When I started I was getting hooked on fruit flavors. Now, all of them are too sweet. I smoked menthol my whole life and am now finding a taste for regular tobacco. Also, leaning towards bakery/custard types.

I know Mt. Baker has a lot of fans but, not for me. Try Ahlusion, I've bought a bunch from them but, have slacked off because of the sweetness. You might try something with menthol or just straight menthol as a palette cleanser. I think Ahlusion also has a neutral juice.

Welcome to Ahlusion

Does sound like you might be changing coils unnecessarily often--an inconvenience and expensive perhaps?
At first I used to religiously clean (Kanger) coils with vinegar and dry burn after flavor change.

Then I stopped cleaning after every flavor change-cause it really didn't seem that bad and....
I bought numerous different colored EVOD tanks to represent the different flavor types I vape. (So for example I keep menthol and mints to the GREEN tank)

Now I simply use Kanthal and organic cotton and rebuild my Kanger coils

I still use my EVODs all the time out of convenience
(You have any idea what a Sig 20W with a Kayfun weighs?---Don't want my shorts falling down while I'm coachnig my kids soccer practice, not to mention the "is that a mod in your pocket or are you just happy to see me" issues.)

Oh yes, I'm completely quit 100% - totally done with smoking for now and forever. As for the weird tastes, I just can't recall for sure if it started exactly before or after my surgery since it was such a close time frame. I did ask my ENT surgeon about this the other day and he just basically said he knows nothing about vaping and has no answer. As for flavors in general like food and drink, he said I shouldn't notice anything extraordinary. And that was all he said.

I would also ask did you have this issue with the first flavor you were vaping? What was it's PG/VG ratio.

At first I tried 36mg 70% VG/30% Distilled H20. I used to smoke thirty cigarettes a day, so in order to effectively quit and switch, the high mg was a necessity. As for the mixture, I would just cough and cough and cough. I don't know if it was the mixture or if it was the change from quitting smoking that causes people to cough a lot to clear their lungs, and also it could've been just getting used to inhaling vapor, which for me is a slightly different action. Anyway, I still have a few of those bottles around and I've tried them - they're still harsh and make me cough, I don't know why. The throat hit is also really horrible - I don't like throat hits and this felt like smoking a Cuban cigar.

So anyway, somehow I got a reverse idea on PG/VG, and thought it was the VG that was so harsh and making me cough, so I started ordering 100% PG. These turned out just fine, actually, although they didn't produce as much of a plume of vapor as I prefer. I liked that the flavor was sweeter and more intense though.

From that point on, I decided to try the company's recommendation regarding the juices they sell which is a 50/50 VG/PG. I've been on 50/50 at 12mg for quite some time now (I weaned myself down off of that high 36mg dosage over a period of weeks).

There is a particular bad taste I've noticed though along with a question - question first: Can the tank you use make stuff taste nasty? This started getting worse when I changed from my pyrex Protank 2 Mini to a plastic 16D iClear from Innokin. (Ironically, it just practically exploded in my hand when I absent mindedly put a sour gummy worm flavor in which must've had citrus in it that caused the instantaneous crack and shatter. I have plenty of extras though so it wasn't a catastrophe or anything). Anyway, I've noticed that my flavors were different, maybe a little bit better in my glass tanks, although the coil that goes with them gets funky quickly and can't handle flavor changes very well. The new plastic tank feels like it gets funky although the coil is much more adaptable to flavor change. Unfortunately, the good coils only fit the plastic clearomizer and can't be put into the glass Kanger tanks. So my question is, can the tank itself and what it's made of mess up the flavor? Note that I clean it several times a day though...

One other question... Has anyone ever noticed a terrible, nasty, NASTY taste in their vapor, particularly when you inhale and then exhale through your nose? I don't know how to explain the smell other than bad. I'm thinking it's just either the nicotine itself, or it's something in the base of the flavor. Since I'm changing my flavor company this coming September for orders, I guess I'll be able to figure it out. In the meantime, has anyone ever experienced this before or is it just me?

HI. I am an Ahlusion vaper. I love their juices. I tried a bunch of the MBV juices and I found they had a strange chemically taste to me, I did not like the base they use to mix.

I also like The Plume Room. I have found that most fresh mixed juice from vendors has to steep for one week to several weeks for me to really like it. I have taught myself to buy my juice in advance so I do not run out of certain flavors.

The quickest and easiest fix for flavor loss or vaper's tongue is to drink Lots of Water. And then drink more. If you get dehydrated it will screw up your vape and taste. I find certain foods or drinks will mess with my tastebuds too.

The biotine is a good idea too. Here are a few links to take a look at.

Oh I forgot to mention... I just ordered iClear 30S Type S tanks for my iTaste CLK 1280, which I believe are made of pyrex. They take their own coils though, so I won't be able to mix and match coils with this clearomizer (possibly glassomizer) at all. And one more question: I just started using a VV unit. Can the voltage make the flavor taste weird? I've noticed that some flavors flourish at 4.0-5.0 while others do better at 3.8... Oh yeah, can I put Pina Colada in my cheap plastic tank or will it crack it? Pineapple seems similar to citrus in its acidity to me...

Read my post directly underneath yours. Was the weird taste from MVB this odd, almost like port-a-potty aftertaste note, especially when exhaling through the nose?

I also tried MBV, and all the ones I tried were awful. I always say, it's great to try to save money, but how much money do you save when you can't vape it?

I'm also a big Ahlusion fan. Clean and crisp flavors. Aging also helps. I saw in another thread you bought Ahlusion's Boba Tea. When you get the Boba Tea, if you don't like it FOOB, put it aside two weeks and come back to it.

If you are looking for a thriftier vendor to try, I can also vouch for ITCVapes.

If it's any indication how good Ahlusion is though, I placed three orders with them this week alone.
