Hi all - another newbie here.

Sorry for this overlong post, but having lurked here for a few days, reading many great posts, watching vids etc., I feel I almost know half of you already, and should return the favour.

I’m a newbie in the sense of this forum and e-cigs, but long time hardened smoker, and I mean smoker. You name it; I probably tried to smoke it, cigarettes, cigars, pipes, rollies, and a few others….. ;)even switching between them in a single night. I love the pipe and adore a cigar, but they do stink the house out.

To be honest, I am still not sure I even want to really stop altogether, much of this is not helped by the whining majority slowly allowing all of our rights and freedom to be stripped away one piece at a time. If cash wasn’t a problem, I’d be importing Cuban cigars by the caseload and sticking my nicotine stained fingers up at the lot of them, mainly just to spite them all.

Am also a big hairy biker (Triumph TBird in case your interested) and outdoorsy, dog (and cat) loving, country lad at heart too, (also have a 4x4 for the dog and fishing) and so have seen them whine and whinge about just about everything I love to do.

Anyway enough of that.

I have tried stopping in the past (mainly cash driven) with the most successful (if you can call it that) being an inhalator for nearly six months a few years ago. I remember thinking at the time, that the idea was there, but it just wasn’t close enough to smoking for me.
I played with the things and even modded one of my old falcon pipes to accept the inhalator cartridges, which was better, but it still wasn’t quite right. Now it seems my head was just about 5 years ahead of the game, if I’d thought about it more, I might even have taken my playings to the next logical step, I do have a basic engineering background and am naturally creative, ….. who knows? but things went pear shaped and I was back on the baccy before I knew it.

Anyway this latest nutty solution, from our left wing dictatorship left me reeling but also realising I was going to be in for a rough ride soon. I smoke Native Spirit or Pueblo rollups by choice (no additives, or preservatives and that leads to another story) and I know damn well that once everything is ‘under the counter’ brands like that will be hard to come by, meaning frequent trips up town to tobacconists (how long before they have to black out the windows like porn shops?) or I need to find another solution.

I had seen a couple of things on e-cigs, but brushed them aside with mild amusement, but after this last insanity step by our leaders, I thought I would look again. I stumbled around found e-cigs.co.uk and via them e-cig review, thought the black mini looked kinda cool (but was it me?) but in the same review was the e-cigar. Ahhhh!

Now as I said (yeah up at the top about 10 pages ago J ) I smoke rollups, but particularly love a cigar- I just can’t afford to smoke that many, and they do stink the house out, my wife is surprisingly forgiving of my habits, but not that forgiving (and even I don’t like the smell of the house after cigars and pipe smoking). So this item started to appeal to me. Also, although not that vain, I could see me feeling comfortable with a cigar. So after some more heavy reading (well about half the posts on this forum) I thought why not? Even if I can cut the rollies down to a few a day (rather than a few pouches a week – I almost chainsmoke at times, I work from home on the pc’s and also smoke a lot when watching movies in the evening) It would mean only I trip up to the naughty shop once a month for my pouch or two of native spirit in a brown paper bag.

Anyway, ordered the shiny one from e-cigs, along with an extra box of carts and some minty juice, and it was here the following morning (that was quick) – and I have to admit I couldn’t wait to try it.
First impressions?
Well close but no cigar. Don’t get me wrong, it has potential, IMO, and the fact you can inhale something akin to smoke is a BIG bonus, I managed a smoke ring or two and even a Frenchie (Inhale slightly into the mouth, letting it drift but then take it up through the nose). The taste isn’t unpleasant, a little strange but not unpleasant. The shape and size is about right (it even fits in my pocket humidor – I’ll post something on that later) but it’s the mouthpiece! It’s very….. plastic?
I have already pierced one of the caps which is better, but I think that is the thing I am going to have trouble getting used to. Next will be playing with juices I think, to try and find the right flavour for me.

Also after reading some of the posts here, and as I can see me puffing away on this nearly all day as I work, I see I am also going to have to get some lows much sooner than I anticipated – or I will poison myself.

But I am also already considering a black mini and/or something lighter to keep in my mouth without pulling teeth. (but something obviously not a cigar or cigarette, or I will be having showdowns with the whining majority) I don’t go to pubs anymore (at the moment) or even out for meals often, but it would be nice to go back to sitting in a coffee shop some times without rushing my coffee (another addiction I’m afraid) so I can have a ciggy.

Flavours, Models, Juices – modding mouthpieces…. I see another addiction brewing – maybe that’s the secret? Replacing your need for an addiction with another?

Enjoyed reading your post Silk. Triumph TBird eh? Great bike! Gives you the sense of speed without needing to go fast :p. I keep threatening to get a bike again but it's 4x4 weather right now and the fuel costs won't have me shelling out for any additional vehicle for a while .

Welcome to the forum - you've enough odd habits and views to fit right in :p.

Starting with the Shimmer I think a good move. In the day I've had it I much prefer it to the other e-cigs I have - except when needing to vape discretely ;).

I think one of the reasons I like it so much is because I've a half dozen 10440 batteries that are cheap and charged 2 at a time with a charger from DealExtreme. This just makes things much simpler - cheaper too. If you get extra batteries be sure to cut off the plastic ring covering part of the negative pole or they'll not work.

Advice on liquids is near impossible give - it's subjective. I'd strongly recommend TW - of the 3 e-liquid sources I've tried the "Virginia" is by far the best - but that's just me.

If you're going to re-fill your carts I'd also suggest you get a blunt neddled syringe - those used for refilling printer cartridges. They're very cheap and easy to find on eBay.

Good luck & happy vaping!

PS - I'd not change your attitude to vaping - it's a good one to start with. Don't think of it as a "stop smoking" device, use it as it suits you and then you'll not associate it with denial.
