Lu, the problem is that all artificial flavors have corresponding chemical names - usually long and scary sounding, but many perfectly harmless. But according to FDA rules, the companies that make flavors do not have to dislcose the specific ingredients, so long as all the ingredients are on the GRAS list (generally regarded as safe).
And diacetyl has been on the GRAS list, although there have been attempts to get the FDA to remove it. I don't know the current status of those attempts however. And although I have read that some flavor makers have voluntarily stopped using it, I think any butter flavor should be regarded as suspicious unless the actual chemical components of the flavor are known.
