I'm not sure if it's normal, and would like to find out if it's possible to avoid.

All my RBAs seem to get very hot very fast. Like after 5 strong pulls, they get hot enough to where I can't use metal drip tips.

Bit of details:

Happens on A7, mini A7, and Reomizer (modded Phoenix)

coils are 1.7 ohm on unregulated mods

horizontal single coil 30 gauge kanthal A1. I tried 32 gauge as well, with the same result.

Wick is cotton. Tried yarn and cotton balls. I usually stuff quite a bit of left over wicking material in the cup, to the level of the coil, leaving a bit of space around the coil.

The only time where it does not happen is if I stuff a LOT of additional filler material into the top cap above the coil, leaving a vertical hole for the air flow. I'm trying to avoid doing that, as it makes it more involved to replace the wick.

Thank you!

"Why are my atties hot?" (Sorry, I can't help myself.)

Because they are designed to produce heat! But seriously folks, that's only 8 watts when battery is cruising at 3.7v and 10w when it is fresh off the charger. It shouldn't get that hot. My wife uses 1Ω dual coils on a mech with no issues. But that's like comparing apples to oranges. I still say if it gets that hot at 8w, it's a design flaw, move on the an AGA-T or something.

Well, from what I hear, with RBAs most of the design flaws can be solved with a different coil setup (something Unloaded suggested and I haven't had a chance to try yet).

AGA-T would probably be great, with two exceptions -- I haven't been able to get SS wicks to the point where I like them (likely my problem), they're a pain to refill, and they don't work very well on bottom feeders :)

First point, I understand.
Second point? Nahhh

Wow. That's pretty cool, I did not know they could be filled that way. I might get one just to play with.

However, I'd like my primary vape to remain a Reo with an RBA. I might get and put an AGA on my pipe mod for home use though

Well, I did get an AGA-T (I believe it's version 1, with the threaded cap). Put in a relatively high resistance coil, 2 ohm, just to start with. Got rid of hot spots and all. Great flavor, great vapor, but the thing still gets hot... That's with 30 ga kanthal wire.

Haven't tried AGA with 32 ga wire yet, but going from 30 to 32 in an A7 seems to make them run noticeably cooler.
