why are cigarettes sold in packs of 20?

In Australia they sell 50 cigarette packs. In Canada most popular brands are sold in 4 package sizes (20 pack, regular length (72mm), 20 pack king size, 25 pack regular size, 25 pack king size). We also have several brands of 100mm cigarettes as well.

Here's a pack of 50 from Australia. It's a good size to keep on your table at home.

There used to be a tobacco shop downtown at a hotel in my town when I was a teenager. They sold cigarettes from all over the world. There was one brand that had assorted colored papers. I think it was called Rainbow or something like that. Another brand was gold toned paper with black filters. We thought those foreign cigarettes were too high priced ... something like a dollar a pack.
