What tools you use for wrapping coils (coil jig, or metal rods, or etc.)

Hi everyone,

I am really in my infant stages of playing around with rebuildables. I have a kayfun lite plus clone and I wanted to make some coils for it but I am horribly clumsy with wrapping around my small drill bits I bought from home depot. I was hoping for some advice on good tools that you all use to make this task easier. I was looking at a couple coil jigs, like this: KK Vapetek Atomizer Coil Jig $17.95 | GOTSMOK.COM.

I do know that I want my wick to be cotton and I want to stay in the 1.3-1.5 ohm range for now for my coils.

Any advice on good tools to use for this, are those coil jigs useful?

Welcome to coil building. I use the yellow set of Stanley precision screwdrivers that comes in the yellow case. They work great. I either use the smallest blade screwdriver or the next to the smallest.

That's the coil I built a while ago. 30 gauge wire wrapped on the 2nd from the smallest screwdriver which is a 2.4mm, built on my 91%. It measures 2.1 Ohms.

I bought the coil gizmo mentioned above when I first started building coils and I loved it! It's great for micro coils. Be sure to get the deluxe version for the extra mandrels. It's very inexpensive too!

I Just wrap the coil around a round wood tooth pick works for me and you can get a whole box for under $1.00

Seriously i will try and find the link - cost £5 little black box folds out you have 5 precision screwdrivers, tweezers, wire cutters, pliers, alan keys its awesome!! use it every time i build the alan keys and precision screwdrivers are perfect for building

I bought one of these off ebay. I just clamp my drill bit in and wind my coil. It is also handy for many other things. It's not large or heavy and you can get a clamp that holds a Dremel, which comes in handy for polishing.

I wrap my coils on drill bits, needles, or just whatever size I want. I always wrap my coil and put it in the head before i wick it. It allows you to adjust it a bit if needed. Dont forget to torch your coils really good guys. I wick with cotton balls but im thinking about changing the type of cotton I use.

So my basic tools are drill bits, tweezers, nail clippers, cotton, kanthal 30 awg, and of course a pair of reading glasses so I can see the coil to thread the cotton

I use my ohm reader as a base. I have the ceramic tweezers posted above (great investment). And I wrap coils on a micro screwdriver.

I have a Micropuck and a Qvapes coiler. I have been using both alternatively for the last few months, and I prefer the Micropuck for one big reason - I can use any size drill bit in addition to the rods that were included in the kit.

My preference as well. With the 40% coupon at Hobby Lobby website, one can be had for 7 bucks and change. I added a nylon bolt thru a rubber grommet, two washers and a wingnut to hold the kanthal at the crook in the winding mandrel. Artistic Wire also makes a wire twister for making some wicked twisted wire coils.Wire Twister 2-5 Hole

I just carved out a piece of hard rock maple and embedded different size drill bit's into it , works perfect and makes perfect micro's without needing fancy gadgets.

I picked up the KKvapetech jig and I love it. I didn't mind wrapping my coils around drill bits, but the jig makes it go pretty quickly. Plus, the shorter rods it comes with are easier for me to use as I'm mounting coils to whatever deck I'm working on. It's small, and can fit into my pockets or my purse very easily. Love the little storage place for the rods as well. I may not loose any that way, and even if I do the thumbscrew that holds the rods in place for making coils can hold a lot of other things in place instead.

I have the KK Vapetek jig and it's awesome. You dont need it, but the jig makes things a piece of cake. I love the rod storage.
