What strength snus do I need?

I would like to try out Swedish snus for fun and as a potential backup for vaping. I'd like to have another option just in case I one day feel forced to go back to smoking. I did a quick bit of reading and found an online US retailer, but I'm not sure what to order. I was a 2 1/2 PAD smoker but have been vaping 30+ mg liquid for 2 years. I was considering ordering extra strong snus, but I don't want to overdo it. I suppose it would make sense for me to order more than one strength to try, but wanted some input as well.

One more question - I want to avoid spitting. Would I be better off with white snus? Do the sprayed "teabags" cause a lot of spit?

I'm considering General Strong Mini white at the moment. I don't know if 6mg is enough. How long is one portion supposed to stay in my mouth? Is it 6mg over the course of an hour, making it akin to using a couple of pieces of NRT gum?

edit: Doing more reading on the internet. I found one guy who was a chainsmoker who uses regular strength, so will have to give it a try. I'm female and I want it to be discreet, so leaning towards the mini portions.

Regular strength is considered to be 8mg. I would recommend getting some different strengths to try. I use 16mg in the morning and 8-12mg the rest of the day. I find that I need an extra boost in the morning. The strong and extra strong portions aren't necessarily any bigger. The thunder berry extra strong portions are actually more compact than the general mint that I use. The stronger ones are made from different parts of the plant.

If you are looking for regular strength in a mini size, there is Thunder mini mint. They are mini size and 8mg. Regular mini portions are usually 4mg. Many people find, like with vaping, that they need stronger snus in the morning, and reduce the mg later in the day.

Thanks, guys. Found an extra strong (16 mg ) Thunder mini. I guess I will order a can of that and one more can of an 8mg snus to start with.

You might want to make sure those are 16mg per portion. Sometimes they'll list it as 16 per 1 gram and the portions might be half a gram.

I forgot to answer your original question about spitting. With snus there is no spitting necessary.

You have good advice for hittman and firechick, but thought I would add in my 2 cents.

No spitting with snus, though sipping on some liquid can be a good idea as you may get an uncomfortable feeling in the throat at first and drinking some liquid can be a big help. With your high nicotine intake mini's are probably not going to do much for you. I would get mostly standard 8 mg portions and perhaps throw in a few stronger cans to get a feel for what works for you. Everyone is different so what you would need would take a bit of experimentation on your part.

The nice thing about snus is that it is very discreet so you can do it essentially anywhere. No batteries required.

I realize there's no spitting like with chewing tobacco; I was just concerned about excess saliva production. That's why I was wondering about white pouches vs. regular pouches.

I use both types of portions. The white portions take a little longer to get the juices flowing and there is probably less saliva production but I really don't notice that much of a difference.

I believe the Thunder mini portions are 16mg per gram of product. Each pouch contains a half gram of product. 1 pouch will have 8mg (half of 16). They are the strongest mini protion, though. Most minis are 4mg. The big thing is to find what works well enough for YOU to help keep you satisfied.

To be on the safe side, I will go ahead and order the Thunder 16 mg regular portion then and get a can of Thunder 8mg mini portions for when I feel like less nic. I was reading through the chit chat ( in your lip/under your nose ) thread and noticed some of you place it towards the back of the mouth, which is what I did with nic gum/lozenges in the past. I guess there's no real reason to put it right under my lip if I am worried about a bulge. That solves the portion size problem.

You will get more saliva production when you place it father back. I place mine close to the middle, but then I'm long past the point of trying to impress the world with my charm and good looks. It is highly unlikely the mini's would be noticeable. In the end you will just do what feels best to you. Doesn't really matter.

I have been using snus off and on since the summer of 2012 , its nice to have on hand in case vaping isnt ideal.

I see most of your questions have been answered, however I will just chime in and say that I have been fond of the General white portions , and right now Kum N Go / 7-11 have them for .99 a tin , thats right NINETY-NINE CENTS a TIN - so it may be worth getting a roll for 5 bucks just to keep in your freezer.

I put my portion in the upper right lip area , probably about center/off center, I have been doing a little fluffing where I rolled it around with my thumb and finger for a couple of seconds and then Ill make sure I lick it just a small bit as I am inserting to ensure it doesnt stay dry for very long.

I was about to place an order online and decided to double check locally and was very pleased to find out that a tobacco shop less than 10 minutes from me carries a number of brands, including General. Woohoo! No crazy shipping for me.

Good for you. Go crazy. The only brand I've seen sold in brick and mortar stores is general. Let us know if you see another brand.

They mentioned at least two others on the phone. Blue Ocean was one and then the lady I spoke to was having trouble pronouncing the other, so I told her not to worry about it. Will let you know if I see others. It's an old pipe tobacco and cigar business that has been around forever. Don't know why I didn't think of it first.

I went to my local shop this morning and picked up 3 cans of General ( original, white, and mini mint ). They did have another small fridge with 2 other brands, but the owner told me he didn't want to sell those to me because they had been sitting for months. I'm guessing he doesn't sell much snus. He had a display of trial packs ( 4 flavors with a few pieces of each ) that looked untouched, unfortunately. He threw one in my bag for me.

I have a mini mint in my mouth at the moment. I like the flavor. I think I will like the original if it tastes like this without the sweetness. I can tell that I am not quite getting enough nic from the mini, but I am getting some at least. I'm going to a theme park with family soon and will bring a can of snus along instead of my vaping supplies. Should be a lot more convenient.

Looks like I will eventually have to go the online route, though. Limited stock + the cans were $8 each. They're only $4ish online, so the shipping really isn't that big of a deal.

Yeah at that price and limited selection I think it would be worthwhile to put in a large stocking order. That will keep your price per can down.
