I have some Ultrafire 14500 batteries, which do not actually say the word 'protected' on them, and in fact, have a spelling and grammatical error:

"The voltgae of full charge and empty condition is 4.2V and 2.75V, Respectively. It is dangerous to heat, Throwing into fire or charging reversely."

They say "LC 14500 900 mAh 3.6V"

Does that mean it's protected? What does 'LC' indicate?

yeah the link that shortstuff posted....

in short theres the little crimp/indent at the top....and the little crimp/indent on the bottom....and the strip running down the side of the battery that you can see/feel...

this translates to the PTC on the positive end, the PCB on the negative end and the strip that connects them..
PCB handles the overcurrent, undercurrent protection and can be reset..
PTC handles the thermal/overtemperature and overpressure protection and physically fails and breaks the connection between positive and negative terminals (the strip) and can vent gas (the vents in the button top)...and cannot be reset..
