I've been smoking Newports for years. I just made the switch to vape. I havent touched a cigarette in 2 days. Making the switch I tend to cough and choke on the slights inhale of vapor. I have to take smaller drags until i gradually inhale larger amount. Does anyone go through the same thing? or have gone through the same thing? I figured smoking Newports were the worst thing that i can inhale-cigarettewise, so vaping should pose that amount of stress on my lungs? Could it be that i am introducing my lungs to a whole new element? or could it be what im vaping on? I use the Halo Triton.

When I first started vaping, like the first few days, it would make me cough in the morning. Like so much that I couldn't vape for he first hour I was awake. Then I started to cough a lot even when I wasn't actively vaping. I think the issue for me was actually a very dry throat. I realized vaping got me REALLY dehydrated. Apparently .. one of the main ingredients (I forget if it's PG or VG) is a humectant and just sucks up the water in your mouth and throat. I MAJORLY upped my water intake and I've been fine ever since.

I coughed like crazy when I started vaping. I found that the longer my vaping session went, the less I coughed. I still cough from vaping in the mornings tho, or later in the day as I get tired. It gets better as time goes by tho.

I recommend that you inhale into your mouth only if your lungs can't handle it. You'll still get your nicotine out of it.

Yeah...remember way back when, when you first started smoking, remember the coughing

It's just "new" to you...I still cough here and there too

It took me a week before my body detoxed from all the icky nasty in my lungs and hacking up "lung cookies" before it subsided

Plus that cough is triggered by a good juice, it's know as a TH (throat hit) you will get used to it

Vape on!

If you are inhaling straight into your lungs, try pulling into your mouth and then inhale from there.

What juice are you vaping? That is more important than the hardware. What nicotine level is it? The more nic, the more throat hit it will have and can cause coughing. Also, does the vape taste good or does it have kind of a burnt taste? If it's a bit burnt tasting there is something wrong with the equipment and I would get in touch with Halo and tell them.

Yes, it can also be a lot of other things, but for the most part I've found it to be these things that matter most of the time. Best of luck with it!

Welcome

When you start the coughing fits can be a combination of things.

You lungs are already really annoyed from smoking. Deep inhaling from vaping adds insult to injury.

Not sure what the ratio of PG/VG is in Halo liquids. Some people find high PG liquids can be irritating, especially when starting.

So what to do?

For most people starting it's a bad idea to vape like you used to smoke. Deep inhaling sends most new vapers into choking fits. Short term, try to change your vaping style to more like smoking a cigar: Big, sort of open mouth, puffs off the e-cig and take the vapor to the back of your throat and no further. "Tight" drags on it and straight into your lungs like a cigarette draw - bad idea for now.

If it's especially bothersome look for another menthol that you can get in what will be called either "high VG" or "100 VG". Short term, you may need to avoid as much of the harshness (aka "throat hit") in high PG liquids as possible while you adjust.

I vape menthols which are 18mg/ml nicotine. I might try the 6mg. The cape taste wonderful from what I can nearly inhale at times. I havent had any burnt taste yet. I also just tried pulling the vapor into my mouth then inhaling from there, it does help!

Those first few days for me was all about un-learning everything I did when I smoked a cigarette. After smoking for 30 years it did take a while, weeks actually, to un-learn "like a cigarette" and get a good vaping technique down to the point where I didn't have to think about how I was inhaling when I vaped. You'll figure it out!

would switching to a lower pg and higher vg mix help with the coughing?

It can, especially when you are starting. And especially if you started with 100 PG or the likes of 70PG/30VG liquids. You can go to the other extreme for now - try a 100 VG - and add PG/reduce VG to find something that give you the best balance between throat it (PG) and vapor production (VG).

And guys, remember when you are sorting all this out - What nic level do I need? Is 70 or 80% PG too much for me? What flavor!!! - stick to small sample size bottles. 10 ml or even 5 ml sizes. There is nothing worse than blowing a pile on huge liquids orders when starting, only to find you can't vape any of it or don't like any of it because one thing is wrong with all those 30 bottles you just ordered: The wrong nic level, the wrong PG/VG ratio...

This is also when having a vape shop near by can be your best friend. You can run to the store to try a different liquid as you need to. Once you sort it out a bit you can translate that experience into saving money with on-line purchases.

There are a lot of things that can lead to coughing. PG is harsher than VG, and high PG juices still tend to make me cough. I pretty much stick to a 50/50 mix to prevent it. Top coil heads like the CE4 tend to be a little hotter vape, and that can lead to a cough. Higher voltage/lower resistance makes quite a few folks cough. The list can just go on and on, so don't be afraid to try different things. There really is a shoe for almost every foot out there.

Sometimes the answer can be something simple. A couple of years ago I gave my daughter a little eGo battery and some LR cartos for Christmas (don't worry she is a MSgt in the AF). She about coughed up a lung! I swaped the LR cartos for some SR cartos, and she has been vaping every since.
