Funny thing happend to me the other night..
On the way home, I decided to stop by a Dunkin Donuts for a decaf iced coffee to enjoy with my new e-cig before bed..
Pretty big line as usual, as this DD happens to be on a very busy intersection in Queens, NY. About 5 people in front of me, I whip out my super-mini w/ orange LED and began puffing away..
I instantly get called out by an off-duty officer (I later find this out) that says, word for word - "You know there's been a ban on indoor smoking for years now, right?"
I reply - "Yep, I know. This is an electronic cigarette though, no tobacco burning, no 2nd hand smoke, just nicotine."
He comes up to me (This is when I notice his badge flash on the side of his belt as he stands up)
and says, with an astonished look - "Ohh.. I heard of these before, show me how it works"
I begin to demonstrate for him, taking off the cartridge, unscrewing the battery from the atomizer, the usual routine.. By then, It became a E-cig Demonstration show, as everyone from the line formed a half-circle around me..
After a 5 minute demonstration, and even taking some questions, I told em I got this from njoy.com (I did order the Dura-C and Pilot, but couldn't recommend that as I haven't receieved it yet, sorry!) And everyone continued with their business.
The officer had no problem with me vaping, and the manager didn't even look towards my direction.
I must say though, when he got up and exposed his badge a little, for a split second I thought I was gonna get slapped with a big fat juicy California-style smoking ticket for 100.00+ which would of sucked!
But i'm glad people are keeping an open mind about these things.
Since these things are relatively new, us e-smokers need to keep in mind that, whether we like it or not, we are the ambassador's of these things. Pretty much no one knows what they are, especially non-smokers. If you get confronted in a negative way, try not to lash out, instead, be informative, or just put it away for a bit until you find another place to smoke. Yes, it sucks that some people don't keep an open mind.. But people are afraid of the things that they are ignorant to, it's just human nature.
