I am a retired insurance underwriter, and my husband is an insurance agent.....his company will not give a non smoking rate to a vaper as long as there is nicotine in their system. vaping has not been around long enough to determine what, if any, effect it has on longevity....not enough years to determine long term effect on life span. If you vape non nic juice and can pass the tobacco (nicotine) test, then you get the reduced non tobacco rates.

I'm 'mature' and don't necessarally have all the comments in this thread in my mind at the moment. As well, I'm not abrest of all the various activities sponsored by CASAA.

It might be good if there were a site where those in the medical field could sign up(?) in endorement of vaping for health reasons. Some in the medical field might not want to apply their name to petitions/lists, etc. One can never be too sure what might come back to haunt them. I wonder what notions along with 'better health' might be useful in soliciting support from medical personel.

Mabye some CASAA operatives have some thoughts.

That's a really good idea in general.

We have seen from anecdotal evidence that doctors from all fields are mostly on board with electronic cigarettes.
Everything from cardiologists, to pulmonologists, to oncologists, to your everyday primary care physicians.

I think this is really the sticking point.

It certainly seems that the health professionals on the ground floor are seeing the benefits of electronic cigarettes.
But the powers that be are not in any way interested in such endorsements at this time.

A doctor may be risking quite a lot in going on record against the establishment.
How many "rebel" doctors are out there willing to put it on the line?

I'm pretty sure vaping isn't smoking since nothing is smoked and there is no smoke involved at all in fact :)

I guess all we can do until insurance companies become more educated is to answer the questions truthfully. So we are tobacco free but not nicotine free. I also agree that disclosing our nicotine use is a good idea. If in doubt though we can always just pay the higher rates as we did when we smoked, as there are untold other benefits to eliminating this terribly unhealthy lifestyle than this ;)

If your doctor does not agree that vaping is much healthier than smoking then you need to find a new one :)

I've recently been searching for new health insurance (I am self employed, so must provide my own.)

Unfortunately, it seems like insurance underwriters have gotten smart and instead of asking about smoking, they ask if I've used any "nicotine products" in the last 12 months.

Seriously, I am the healthiest person I know despite being a long-time heavy smoker; and almost all of my friends/family are non-smokers (but without exception everyone I know in my 50s age range is dealing with at least one chronic condition, if not several.) I think I have my mother's genes...she turns 80 next month and still does yoga and headstands and hikes. I take no medications, all my joints are just fine, I'm thin, strong, routine health exams consistently show everything is normal, I feel good physically, etc. The only thing I've visited doctors for in the last decade are annual female-type exams and one visit to get good pain meds for a bad-back episode. The last non-routine visit before that was in 1994 to have a chunk of drywall removed from my eye...18 years ago.

Soooo....I've been fibbing and saying I'm a non-nicotine user. Nothing in my medical history in the past few years indicates I smoked, or, now, vape. I refuse to be truthful just to take a stand. Health insurance companies have made a ....-load of money from me and will throw me or any of us under the bus if we become bothersome and they can get away with it.

The thing is there is a test for nicotine. So, if they require a health exam, they are liable to find out. If you get a serious illness. you might be in for a nasty surprise.

i went to see my doctor a few weeks ago and he asked me if i smoked and i explained that i vaped and had been for quite some time. he wrote down in his notes " former smoker " .the government in the UK are apparently trying to encourage vaping so once those brick and mortar shops get off the ground in a significant number it should spread very quickly.
