I am trying to get my son-in-law off of his bad 1 1/2 pack per day Marlboro cigarette smoking habit.

I let him use my Kayfun Lite+ V2 atomizer with a single 1.3 ohm coil powered by 10.5 watts. The DIY juice in the tank was 15mg nic ... This combo was certainly a 'tootle-puffer' type of low power mouth to lung style vape.

Well, that didn't work for him at all. He just started coughing badly when mouth to lung inhaling the vape. He tried using this for a couple of days, but just couldn't continue because of the coughing ... How he can chain smoke those Marlboro Reds, but coughs his brains out on vape juice is beyond me !

Anyway, for my question ... Instead of buying those Nic Salt pods that they now sell everywhere, could I just buy maybe some 25mg Nic Salt juice and use that in my Kayfun for him to try? ... again, the Kayfun is using a 1.3 ohm coil and powered by a low 10.5 watts.

I heard that Nic Salt juice don't have a very strong 'throat hit, so maybe he would not cough vaping it.

BTW ... He said he would be willing to give up cigarettes if vaping didn't make him cough so much.

Thanks for any info ...
Ron

Before investing a lot into someone who is not committed to switching to vaping, have him try a disposable. They contain nic salts and are easy on the throat. If he likes that, then he can get his own setup with nic salts, which would be more appropriate for a pack and a half per day smoker.

I believe many of us started with coughing on the first vape, the nicotine from vape is a whole different thing as from stinkies and just needs a bit time to settle. (time to get used to it)

This also was happening with myself at first but I was aware of it and continued slowly, trials and figured out what lv. of nic I required.

It would be a whole different story for me, especially if starting it without knowing anything about it. I would be scared and might stop vaping it.

Hope you get my point and figure out if you can change somethings or even maybe pod devices.

    Be well,

It could be so many things.

I forgot to bring my juice to work the other day. So, I went next door to the vape shop to pick up some spare juice.

There's so much to consider. Salts vs Free-base. Flavor. Nicotine level.

Once I bought my juice and starting using it, I realized I had forgotten one problem. I normally mix my own juice with no more than 5% flavoring. Commercial juices use a lot more than that. I kept coughing all day. I switched back to my own juice as soon as I got home.

There are just so many possibilities for where the problem could be!

I appreciate all the comments ... However, my main question is: Using a good mouth to lung atomizer (like the Kayfun), do you think that it would work well with nic salt juices? It sure vapes nice on the 15mg nic 'freebase' juice I am using now.

Again, low power ... 1.3 ohm single Kanthal coil powered by 10.5 watts.

I am thinking that buying bottles of nic salt juice and vaping it in an atomizer like the Kayfun would be a lot cheaper over time that continually buying these Juul pods or Juul one-time use devices.

Maybe 15mg freebase is too high for him in that respect. Vaping used to tickle my throat when I first started and that would sometimes make me want to cough. It went away and never came back. I have no idea why.

No, Provari closed up shop long ago...

Yes, you can use nic salts in the KF with low watts. No reason you can't.

Agree, shouldn't be an issue. (The KFL2 is one of my 2 "always in use" rtas, mtl tootler, but at 8.5 watts, and about 18 mg/ml of nic. And, other than the table top, that could be in my hand:) )

PG/VG ratio may also play a part, high PG may be a bit harsher, so maybe 50/50?

I'd not be too concerned abut nic level for now, that 15 might be just fine if he can get past the cough. (Although I did go to 24 for a few months when I started, so, yeah, maybe. But I'd not go that way until he gets to the point where he's vaping and it's just not quite enough.)

    they are still selling them?

No, Provaris went out of production years ago. But the mod isn't the problem here anyway. Plus you want to spend the least amount of money on new vapers because some people just don't take to it for a plethora of reasons. It's just too different than smoking for some and most smokers are willing to accept that. Smoking is very familiar and too damn easy. Never heard a smoker ask "Hey, why isn't this cigarette not working?" :D

I think 25 mg salts in a kayfun sounds like a good plan. I quit with 50 mg in a pod thing. Less prone to coughing IMO.:)

Indeed - salts has less throat hit than free base, VG has less than PG.

I think your on the right track - 'rig wise' a low volume/output 'toodle puffing' setup is a good place to start.

The trick now is to dial in the juice.

While I got my start with 18mg freebase flavored juice in a Aspire K1 (toodle puffing to the max!) I believe the mix was 50/50 PG/VG.

Might I suggest getting some VG and diluting some juice down to low mg and higher % VG and letting your friend try vaping that.

    just an idea,
