Hey all,

I use cotton in my rda's and generally buy whatever organic cotton balls I can get in my local supermarket. I hear stories about people boiling cotton and only using specific cotton and its got me thinking.

Are they any differences in taste, wicking, capacity and so between brands of cotton. I don't boil my cotton and don't really want to go to all that effort either. I was however looking at these sterile cotton balls which were quite cheap from a medical supply company online:

Rocialle Cotton Wool Balls Large Sterile x5

Any thoughts on this topic?

From my understanding, most people who use organic don't boil their cotton, I just use 100% pure sterile, and do boil it otherwise there is a "taste" to it, I was reading another thread where people are using some japanese cotton pads..the microcoil thread in here actually, shiseido(not sure about spelling) and KGD, which is short for uh koh gen do iirc, someone else also mentioned unbleached muji pads, they say all of those have no taste, and are easier to make "even" wicks with since it's pad form and easier to cut/roll. but I have yet to buy some. About the most help I can offer :p,

Yeah I tend to find that I don't get as lean of a taste as I did when I was using ekowool. Do you know of a good brand of sterile cotton balls available in the UK?

ive boiled all the cotton ive used apart from a massive roll I found in our first aid box, it looked natural and not as white as cotton ball's but I can't tell you what that was as it was already started on before I got my hands on it(had no wrapping or name)
Muji is good from ebay, no washing, just cut and use.

if you do decide to try some rolls you get at the chemist be careful they aren't all cotton, I bought some cheap ones that melted in the wick :D

I think it was 7quid for 140 muji pads I can find the link you are interested

Just first google result, just look around..might can find better deals...Might can find those pads at a decent price too, it's what I'm trying next.

I saw those but I found them to be a bit pricey (although not too bad considering you are getting 200). What are your experiences with sterile over normal organic?

Those muji pads look interesting, might have to give them a go.

I ment they melted in the coil.. doh!

yeah you will defo like muji... just do as pdib and superXdrifter do and peel it in half like a sandwich then cut the size you need, or if you use 1/8id coil's then just cut a 1/8 strip (along the strands) from a whole un-split pad, super easy stuff to use and is going to last a long time... I haven't even used a whole pad yet in the two weeks of experimenting with it :)

Two weeks is pretty impressive for one pad, I usually get through about 10 cotton balls a week, but I like to change my coils out every 2-3 days to try different builds / depending on my mood :p
