Starting to smell smoke after years of vaping?

From the time I was 14 to about 23 I had long periods of smoking and no smoking at all. I would smoke for a year or two and quit for about the same length of time with long periods of only smoking when I was drinking. I was never addicted in my opinion, but I suppose some would argue that. From about 23 to about 37 I pretty much only smoked when I was drinking, which was about 1-3 times per month. I'm 44 now and about 6-7 years ago after I started vaping I never smoked again. After vaping for a while I couldn't stand cigarettes and found them so harsh I couldn't imagine ever smoking again. I never smoked indoors or in enclosed areas, I couldn't stand being surrounded by smoke. I smoked in my cars sometimes with the window open, but those cars are long gone now.

About a year ago I started noticing a faint smell of smoke and I would think someone around me must have been smoking before they came in my office/house/car/etc and didn't think much of it. Eventually I realized it's me smelling smoke that isn't there. It seems to be worse the more I vape in a day. Some people say if you see the vapor you start to think of smoke and smell it but that isn't the case in this situation, and that wouldn't make sense since I never smelled it in the first five years I vaped. I'm smelling it later, sometimes while vaping, but I really notice it when I come home where I don't usually vape until I go to bed and watch tv. I've never really vaped large quantities of juice in a day and I still only use a regular non-sub ohm setup (vamo, ego, nautilus type stuff). I use about 2ml of 3mg juice every two days. I've always used about the same amount of juice, but I went from 24mg to 16-18mg to 6-8mg to 3mg.

The smell of smoke is getting more frequent and more noticeable. The reason I'm posting this is because today I was vaping at work and on the way home, while vaping, I started to smell smoke and now it's about 5 hours after I vaped and the smell of smoke is still there. What's strange is I can taste and smell other things just fine, but just breathing normally there's like an ambient smell of smoke. I'm worried that after years of vaping I'm damaging my sense of smell or something, but that doesn't make sense since vaping doesn't smell like smoke.

Has anyone else experienced this or know what it might be? Searching for this issue I only found posts about ex-smokers smelling smoke in their house or car, or people saying others smelled smoke on them when they vaped.

Interesting, I may have answered my own question:

zoomhealth said:
In the case of phantosmia, it is the perception of a smell in the absence of any physical odors. So, a hallucination of something that does not actually exist. In a 2013 study, by the Center for Molecular Nutrition and Sensory Disorder, they discovered that phantosmia was often initiated by one of the following: coughing, laughing, crying, sneezing, blowing the nose, loud speech or shouting, any intense emotional outburst, physical exertion, strenuous exercise, forced nasal inhalation and/or exhalation or hyperventilation.

While Jerry W. Swanson, M.D, from the Mayo Clinic, explains that, “phantosmia most often occurs as a result of a head injury or upper respiratory infection.” Both indicating that it can be brought on by a great number of factors.

Parosmia, on the other hand, is not the perception of a smell in the absence of an odor, but a misinterpretation of a physical stimulus. In this instance the the brain fails to properly identify an odor’s “natural” smell, and transforms it into something different, typically something burning.

Not trying to worry you or nowt but i would get that checked out at the doctors

“These phantom smells can be caused by damage to the olfactory nerve by chemicals, or infection with a virus or bacteria, or trauma. A tumor of the brain or the olfactory nerve can also cause phantom smells. ... And the resulting sensation is then confused in the brain with the smell of cigarette smoke.”

off topic... some people might get upset at the Pres being a Vulcan... and others would be upset that the Pres was portrayed as a Vulcan... or is it Romulan ;)

I can smell smoke while on the interstate in slow traffic... and sure enuf I will eventually see a cloud exit the window of a vehicle several cars ahead... amazing how sensitive our sense of smell can be...

Can others smell the smoke or JUST you?
(Do you vape tobacco flavours?)

Me thinks: Sinus infection. See your doctor.

After years of working with solvents, catalysts and adhesives I left the field. Due to finances, a year or 2 later I got back into it (or rather I "tried" to).

After only 1 shift, on my way home in the car with the window down it was as if I was still at work with my head over a big pan of hot solvent.
When I got home I showered more than once, put my clothing outside, but could not shake the smell. It was like having a 5 gallon pail of solvent strapped around my neck under my nose. Even my eyes were stinging.

After a few sleepless hours I drove back to work (where I had only worked 1 day), waited till the boss came in first thing and quit. It lasted a few days and disappeared thankfully.
That's my short story. haha.

It may be you simply have a heightened sensitivity to it now.
I can smell it a block away now sometimes (smoke that is).
Good Luck. Cheers.

another thought...
Are you vaping a new flavor ?
I have found that some leave a slight smoldering paper/cardboard - musty type of smell.
Things with maple or butterscotch do it for me (so do some caramels)...and my dragon fruit does it too ( my co-worker can smell it)
I even have to wash out my nose
I can't vape those at work with good conscience ( I can vape at my office )

And things with honey - mercy I think those leave an odor that just flat stinks !

I remember getting that phantom smoke smell when I smoked or was quitting smoking. It was my body's way of reminding me that I was addicted to cigarettes and that it needed one.

I haven't had that phantom smell in years. I wonder if it is a last ditch effort the brain is trying to get you tempted to have one?

The length of time that you have been smelling this phantom smoke is worrying though. Mine only lasted a month maybe...

I was thinking that too this summer as when I'd get up in the middle of the night to pee then I'd smell cigs. Stank like cows .... and dirty ash trays, and I thought the odor was seeping through my pores. Was happening a lot.
Then I realized it was the person on the balcony below mine smoking cigs, drafting up to my open window.

I hope you get to the bottom of what's causing it, badcrc, whatever it may be.
