Hey ya"ll. I've been building coils for over a year now initially, micro contact coils for my REO Grand squonker at about 1.5 ohms. Great mod but, got tired of scorching the cotton because I didn't keep up with the squonking. About 3 months ago, moved to Kayfun style tanks (Lemo II and Kanger ST mini) and the Aeolus dripper, which I'll probably use until the next Phil Busardo or Grimm Green video extolling the virtues of the next best thing.
Can anybody tell me the difference in performance between spaced and contact coils? What should I consider when choosing either? I mostly vape anywhere between 1.2 - 0.5 ohms on regulated DNA 40 style mods.

Airflow cools them down much better, I swear by them. Taste.. I don't think they'll taste any difference, except that you'll get good flavor most (if not all) the time, rather than dealing with bad taste/dry hits from contacts. This is all especially important for lower airflow atomizers, Origen in my case.

There is a mega thread with all the contact coil sauce that you can stand. I do spaced in a tight chamber atty with smaller airflow. It keeps the coil cooler and prevents coil fouling like a touching coil does. If I happen to wrap a spaced coil in my RDA I just crank up the watts a few.

In a RDA I use touching coils as I have an abundance of airflow to keep my coils cool. Touching coils have more concentrated heat and tend to be a pain to cool in a KF et al.

There is no correct answer (don't let the tensioned coil truthers will try to steer you in), and in all reality you have to find a build that suits your needs. IMO performance wise between two on a regulated mod is negligible as it can be adjusted at the push of a button.

Here is another discussion that may help some:

I've found the same thing in my 2 weeks with REO's, there's not a noticeable difference. I use Ready X Wick, because I'm lazy and do care to be messing with things unless I want to. It would solve your REO issues, you can't burn it and you can wash it in water and reuse it for months.

I've been more interested in making consistent coils than anything else, RxW needs a fairly specific size so the only things I can adjust are wire size and number of wraps. I built the turbo coiler (a few threads down) after not having much luck with the coil gizmo. I could build the same coil twice and get different results on the meter or one would work great and the other wouldn't have any taste. They're not all the same yet, but they've all worked.

While I was fiddling around last night trying to build another tensioned dual parallel coil for my other Nuppin I wasn't having any luck making a second perfectly touching build like the first and I was running a bit low on 28ga. I made a perfectly spaced coil and decided I would just go with it. It works just fine, but I did have quite a bit of trouble getting the RxW in it so I won't be trying that again although the result was OK.
