I am not a scientist or claim to know one,
I used to own a dairy chemical co., We blended sanitation chemicals from concentrated raw materials. One of the products we blended was Iodine based teat dips.
besides the iodine we used emollients normally packaged in a concentrated blend. I bought glycerin in bulk(275 gallon totes). When bio diesel glycerin came on the market it was touted as a cheap replacement for natural VG, Just as pure Just as good is what they said. In reality the glycerin from bio-fuel is a hazmat problem for fuel manufactures and they would like to dump it on the market to eliminate the problem ($$$$) for themselves.
Long story short. We tried some as a test, the customer agreed in a effort to save money.(BENNTAG was the vendor pushing the product!) The stuff is dirt cheap and abundant. We pressed on before it was restricted.
I do not know the current status of Bio-diesel based glycerin, but at the time,in short order the FDA, USDA stepped in and did not allow the
use of Bio-diesel based glycerin as a additive for sanitizing teats.
It contained impurities(toxic fuel related) that cannot be removed with out some very expensive equipment to purify it. At the time it cost as much to filter it as regular old market priced natural VG. but in the effort to save money.
The stuff we trialed FAILED miserably, was too harsh for the skin of the teat on milk cows. The process to make bio-fuel requires some very nasty chemicals(lye is one of them: a strong caustic!) to separate the fuel from the plant matter. These chemicals leach in to the glycerin, this caused a PH problem in the final product, way to high for
the skin of the cow.
For me I'll pass on any sketchy glycerin that is dirt cheap or has no COA with it .
