Protected vs. Unprotected 18650 Batteries

Is it a good idea to use 18650 protected batteries in a regulated mod? Another poster recommended against it. Any ideas? Thanks

Protected batteries are Lithium Cobalt chemisty, which is explosive. That's the reason for the protection chip.
The reason that they are NOT a good idea for a regulated mod (or any pv for that matter) is because they are also LOW AMPERAGE, and can't do the job.

It would be best to use a IMR chemistry battery. Most are unprotected but feature safer chemistry.

Protected ICR batteries are a poor choice for two reasons.

The main reason is that most protected batteries use a more volatile chemistry that will vent flames if it vents. IMR batteries will just vent hot gasses that are not flammable..
Also, the protection circuitry in a Protected battery may not "play nice" with the built in protections circuitry in most regulated mods.

Stick with IMR chemistry batteries. There are many good choices out there.

Provided that they are "safe chemistry". You would NEVER-EVER want to use an unprotected Lithium Cobalt battery in an e-cig!

Low amperage and highly volatile - If the protection circuit works properly it will shut down your mod, if the protection circuit fails

The biggest reason is the protection circuitry in the battery tends to mess with the chip in the mod. You'll find that usually, attempting to use a protected battery in a regulated mod results in a mod that doesn't fire properly, if at all.
