Hello everyone.

Was looking into the possibility of piezoelecric atomizers instead of a heating coil. These have a ultrasonic vibrating crystal and are already used with PG or VG solutions to make theatrical fog.

Some googling found this little guy, its 25mm in diameter but surely this could be shrunk down to say 8mm needed for an electronic cigarette.

Anybody with more electronics knowledge than me is welcome to contribute to this thread as I know little of the practical reasons why this may or may not be possible. Seems like if it could be made to work would be the ideal solution

OK final link and the best!

It is a USB powered aromatic diffuser. This device seems to run on the right type of voltage and current AND just look at the pretty picture with the vapour coming out of it!

Now this device is just BEGGING to be modded into an electronic cigarette. I think I will have to get one and see what can be done.

This is actually quite a surprise seems like the right hardware to make an ultrasonic electronic cigarette exist right now off the shelf!!

Don't these aroma vaporizers...vaporize oils? It will be probably burn the eliquid. But there is only one way to find out. It would would be great if they work...Good luck with your tests...keep us posted.

LOL it doesn't get hot. The metal disk flutters super fast and turns the liquid into a fine mist. Our humidifier works the same exact way.

Biggest problem will be everybody complaining about no throat hit. It takes heat to get throat hit.

Im surprised one of you hasn't gone to walmart and picked up one of the Ultrasonic Humidifiers to break apart (given their availability and price)

Search results for Humidifier - Wal-mart

Check one of those out... (I suggest getting one of the animal ones so you can at least use it for something[flowers, cookies, etc] when you get done with it...and they are the cheapest ones...)

I have an old Walgreens one that Im thinking about pulling apart since it only cost me 3$ at a garage sale..

Let me know if this sparks anyone's modder side and picks one of these up and tests it... (my wife would kill me if I broke her humidifier without a good reason lol...)

Negative Ion? Anyone looked into that technology?

Wow that is pretty good. It doesn't get hot means it might actually last longer than normal ecig atomizers. I wonder...?

About the throat hit...I think it has more to do with the nicotine level and how spicy the tobacco is. Throat hit from lets say cigarettes like the original Gualoises or Gitanes is at least five times more than marlboro red or camel cigarettes. The reason is it is very spicy tobacco. they don't burn any hotter than normal tobacco. Try an experiment... add some jalapeno juice to your e liquid....the throat hit will go up radically as well as the chest punch. Now another way of getting strong throat hit is just go buy a higher nicotine level juice...you will notice stronger throat hits.

The mist will feel decidedly cool rather than room temperature (hold your hand in the mist from a cool-steam humidifier and you will now what i mean).

I seee the best use of a piezo as beng able to deliver a consistent and known dose of fluid to the atomiser heater coil, without all the wicking stuff (atomiser wicking and cart wicking. The juice could be held away from mouthiece, of a larger quantity, will not leak. Could solve so may problems.

upside :

* no leaking likely
* higher capacity of juice possible
* consistent juice flow
* known dose (could even be variable)
* don't need any wicking

downside :

* slight cost increase
* might introduce incompatability with existing kit (no big deal); the refillable, high capacity juice reservoir will go between battery and atomiser (and maintain electrical throughput)

Could well be more heavy-duty. I would be very intrested to see someone make a gitanne-style power smoker from one ...

In other words it wont fit in a 901 tube, but who cares! Wll need a good battery (pack) - again no problem. Maybe even keep the trigger and nozzle system instead of a button and wick :) Seriously, a low tech power solution available for the cost of pulling a trigger rather than pushing a button.

Go for it !

But rebuild into something less gun-like, so as not to scare people that you're about to top yourself.

Just another thought about piezo's is that most nebulizers and humidifiers are probably geared towards fluids that have a viscosity similar to water. I know they say "essential oils" but I don't know what that means, and it sounds like a marketing thing to me.

Most of the medial ultrasonic mesh transducers that I found had a disclaimer that they only work with specific medicines. Such as albuteral, which is basically the same viscosity as water.
