I am replacing the wick in my Nautilus Mini BVC coils with Japanese cotton. I had recently watched Phil Pbusardo's video on wick material and decided to put this with thru the burn test. What I saw or more so what I smelled was very concerning to me. There was a deep chemical smell coming from the wick as I burned it.

Has anyone else tried to burn this material?

Do the coils get hot enough to burn this material and how bad does anyone think the side effects of smoking this ceramic material can be?

I am definately changing these coils to cotton... at least I know with the cotton its not as bad as an analog. This ceramic could be super dangerous...

Ceramic is very very resistant to heat, cotton is not. Anything burnt would be gunk on the coils burning off. I dry burn my bvc and once done, they work great again. Never had a chemical taste, just burnt gunk taste. Think of all the things that are made of ceramic that are made to get hot? Ceramic tiles on the space shuttle for example. I had carto tanks with cotton. The cotton burned up all the time, horrible smell and taste. No issues with my bvc.

Aaron.. another way of looking at it.. I think the concern with ceramic wick is if particles can/are being inhaled into the lungs.. if that is the case than perhaps what you are saying could make it even more dangerous inside the lungs.. Its a material that is heat resistant and won't biodegrade.. I don't think anyone knows anything really.. its all guess work..

I did one in cotton. It lasted 2 days before it went south. The vertical is easy to rebuild but the cotton was a big fail. I've got a 3 week old coil firing at 11.5w started at 9 and the juice is as good as the day I put the coil in. I would think if you got the ceramic wick hot enough in the tank to give off an odor you would also taste it and it's possible I did it toying with a hana mod didn't check wattage and fired at 30w, nasty, dumped the tank and tossed the coil.

Ceramic could be dangerous, or be better than cotton.. I read different things all the time.. I been using cotton and i ended up getting asthma or some lung condition.. I don't know if its from the cotton or not,, but Ive heard others being sensitive to cotton and their throat closing up.. Some say cotton releases a chemical when it is heated up to near burning temperatures.. All this stuff is guess work and wishful thinking... we are all addicts and want our cake and eat it too..
