I am new to DIY and have been reading for a couple weeks now, here is a bit of info i have collected over the past few weeks:
sure, the flavoring mft. may say their flavorings do not contain diacetyl... but i am not taking any chances..just in case there are small traces of it.
i mean, strawberry is strawberry and banana is banana.. how do they get the strawberry or banana flavor without the 'chemical composition' as stated above???
i just am not taking any chances. i stopped smoking for many reasons....one of them is to save my lungs. what we are talking about here with diacetyl.. well, it will destroy your lungs. therefore, i am staying away from these flavors (or any more that i might find in the future).
alot of vendors may call it... oh, i dont know, lets say black cherry marshmallow. well, to me that sounds like its only black cherry and marshmallow...BUT, they may add a touch of strawberry as a subtle note. or blueberry.. or butterscotch or caramel, all of the above... who knows? they all seem to have their little secret to subtle notes in a juice AND they aint tellin ya whats in there because it is 'their little secret."
i know 'something' is in there because that 'something' is making it a little more yummy than my diy juice. . i want to KNOW what is in there. so the majority of the time, i make my own for this simple reason
i stay away from citrus blends completely.
hope this helps
- Diacetyl is the main ingredient of the typical butter aroma. It occurs naturally in apples, beans, butter, artichokes, black currants, blueberries, blue cheese and wheat.
- Diacetyl tastes like butter or butterscotch and in fact is used in the production of artificial butter flavors.
- The strawberry flavoring added to foods, like yogurt, ice cream and certain fast-food strawberry milkshakes, usually contains diacetyl as one of the chemical ingredients
- The chemical composition of artificial banana flavoring is similar to strawberry flavoring, with diacetyl acting as one of a number of chemicals in the ingredient list.
- A naturally occurring chemical in dairy products like milk and cheese, diacetyl is sometimes added to enhance the flavor of such products.
