So i've gotten into RDAs and i've gotten wrapping a coil down perfectly. i've gotten threading the coil with a wick down perfectly as well. What I can't seem to master is a long wick! My goal has been to make to make a wick long enough to stuff the reservoir of my rda. The problem i'm running into is this...

Whenever I make a short wick, I can vape it until its dry, there is little to no warning, just mid hit it gets very warm and its dry. I'm fine with that but I have to drip often. When I look at the wick at this point the wick is practically bone dry. I'm fine with that.. however when I make a long wick, I get a completely different behavior. After just about the same time as vaping on a short wick, I'll get the dry hit and I look at my wick and the part near the coil is dry like it would be on the short wick and the rest of the wick is still half saturated. I know you guys are probably going to instantly think that the coil must be too tight but thats not the case. the wick touches the coil but can be moved freely. I see pictures of other peoples wicks (bunny ears, etc) and they are wrapped much tighter than mine.

What could I possibly doing wrong that restricts the juice from getting to the coil? thoughts?

IME this is just what long wicks do. You can wait a minute or so for the juice to migrate to the coil, but I generally don't want to wait and end up dripping more. So I just go with short wicks since they are easier to clean and change flavors with. If you want something that holds more juice, consider something with a tank or a deeper juice well. You could also try a cotton wick, as they tend to wick faster.

I have a feeling my experience is pretty much what cloudz explained.
As for rolled cotton, I'm not sure what that is? Right now I use make up pads that I pilfered from wifey. What is rolled cotton?

Also, does a long cotton wick require a "break in" period before it starts to saturate properly? I just wish I could make a long wick to stuff my reservoir when I know I'm going to be out and about. What confuses me is how people can use an octopus rda with all those long wicks and don't seem to complain about wicking problems. I've created wicks like the octopus ships with and I end up with the same thing. Vapes great then starts to get dry with tons of liquid in the end of the wick.

Have you tried wrapping you coil around a long wick folded in half?

With that tiny of a diameter with your silica, you may even be able to get 2 folds, giving you 4 wicks in your coil...

yeah, i tried folding the silica. i've got 3mm silica but i bought the .6mm silica so i could wrap a bunch together to make an octopus style wick. I've made everything from single to 10(!) wicks and its always the same result lmao. by the time i start getting semi-dry hits, i pull the cap on my rda and check things out and the end of the wick is still way saturated. because of those experiences, i started using cotton again and i'm having better results.. but i dont think i'll be able to get to my goal of filling the reservoir with wick and having a rda "carto" so to speak. :(
