Hi, my name is Stephen a retired pharmacist and a smoking quitter for 18 months.
I used to get sore spots and ulcers regularly after stooping cigarettes.
My son told me about nicotine replacement lozenges or gum which has to be taken every day but certainly made the ulcers go in time.
On holiday in Switzerland I could not buy the lozenges and was in pain over lunch.
The salad came with olive oil and wine vinegar, and when I tried the salad with the vinegar, my mouth smarted, but the pain went away as did the sores.

So in summary, nicotine replacement does work but has to be taken regularly each day.
Wine or balsamic vinegar has a very bitter taste, but cured my sores for good. I take the vinegar twice a week as it gives you a nice energy lift, but this is the only cure I have found.
Hope this helps!

Hi Stephen and welcome. Stopping smoking causing lesions in your mouth seems very unusual. Usually smoking is what irritates and causes lesions. I'm glad to hear they're gone, but a close looksee by your dentist or an ENT doctor might be a hood idea to be sure nothing serious is going on.

And congrats on quitting cigarettes for 18 months now! That's a great accomplishment!

Welcome to the friendly bunch :)

I agree your ulcer problem probably isn't caused by your stopping smoking although I suppose if they are herpes virus related the smoke may limit the proliferation of the virus in your mouth. I expect you were a bit run down...that's the more likely cause.

Congratulations for giving up the death sticks....we all know how difficult it can be :)

Congrats on stopping smoking.
What has your dentist/doctor determined to be the cause/source of your mouth ulcers?

Cheers

I am a pharmacist, it is a noted fact about 20% of smokers get sores and ulcers.
The cause of the sores once smoking is stopped is not known, saliva or ph differences perhaps.
NRT helps but the wine or balsamic vinegar was a cure from heaven!

Hi Thanks, It was certainly caused by smoking cessation for me - I have tried to quit several times and each time within a week or so, started with painful sores.
When I started to smoke again these went away. The vinegar ids the only cure I know - balsamic or wine vinegar, I swish this around my mouth then swallow and the sores go away or are relieved immediately.

Got cha :thumb:
So it is related to the PH of your saliva/mouth.

Are you a coffee/tea dinker? yes
Do you eat a lot of raw fruits and vegetables? average amount
Are you diabetic? No
Do you take any daily medications? No
Are you vegetarian or vegan? No
It is certainly the stopping smoking for me that causes sores after a week or so of quitting and continuing for at least 18 months
Cheers

Hello Stephen
Do you vape?
Hello Stephen
Do you vape?
Hi Letita,
Yes from time to time but not now.
I had a vape from the biggest tank I have ever seen on holiday in Italy recently.
Not keen on the idea of breathing in the smoke from vapes, we don't know enough yet about the consequences.
It is very very difficult to give up smoking, nicotine gets to the brain in seconds.
I am glad I am "clean" as i was really addicted and used to need a cigarette at 4am!
