Make a chimney from mesh (Kayfun/Taifun...)

Just came into this as I'm the new owner of 3 kayfun 3.1 clones (at $16.55 ea. with free shipping just couldn't resist) 
Out of sheer curiosity, how do you fix it? Also how is it working? I thought the purpose of the threaded chimney was to create vacuum and pull the juice up through the chanels, doesn't air seep through the mesh?
