Once I was cleaning my Ody wick on the stove without taking apart the coil. The coil was Kanthal A-1 32 AWG and I used .999 silver wire 30 gauge as NR wire.

What happened was that the silver wire melted at the joints, so the Kanthal and the Silver wire were soldered together.

Later I tried to replicate the effect with no luck :( the silver wire melted too much.

Obviously the amount of wraps will be influenced by the wick thickness. I find that for a 1.5-1.6 Ohm resistance on 34g nichrome I can get almost 4-5 wraps around the COV standard Ody wick if I use single wick on the coil. My favorite however is the extra piece of wick on the coil part so with double wick on the coil the wraps drop to 3-3.5
