Hi All

Not sure if this is the right place, if not, could a mod move please :)

I'm still a relative noobie at vaping & I've recently just moved onto EVODs & Protank 2. Loving it so far, best thing i did upgrading from ce5's, Yuk! :glare:

Anyways, I was to start rewicking and recoiling my own attys however I'm not sure what wick & wire to order?

So a couple of q's:

Is silica wick the best to use?
What mm silica wick should i order?

I've read that Kanthal A1 is the best wire so i guess i'm going with this but:
What gauge should i go for or what mm?

I'm using 2.5 ohm currently from stock attys so i'll probably stick with this.

Thanks for any help

Dan

I use A1 32 wire and 2 or 1 mm silica - some people are really liking organic cotton (available at Walgreens drugstore) but be aware you cannot dry burn it

Do you have a mod you can check for shorts and check ohms on?

I use the machine screw method (see youtube for multiple how to vids - 3/48 size - available in most hobby shops with rc kits) 5 wrap 32 usually gives me 1.9 ohms in my protanks and evods

If you are shooting for a coil in the 2.5ohm range you are defiantly going to want to go with 32ga kanthal. I use that to make 2.2ohm coils for my evod and upping that to 2.5 wouldn't be hard at all with a couple extra wraps. I prefer to use cotton from cotton balls in my wicks as it seems to wick so much better in my experience. Silica is a little more forgiving for a beginner tho as finding the right amount of cotton to use can be tricky at first.

Fantastic, as always a great response from the community. Thanks Guys

I think i'll go for 2mm Silica Wick & 32 gauge Kanthal for now. Until I learn the ropes etc then I might start messing around with cotton, I've never heard of Walgreens so I presume its US based. I'm from the UK but i'm sure i could find something similar.

I do have a Vamo v3 on its way from fasttech so I think I can use this to check resistances etc, if not i'll get myself a multimeter to check.

One other question I have is, should i single wick or fold it over into 2/4 levels?

All very good intentions on your part Dan... in particular, the one to buy a DMM.

On the last - as 2mm silica can vary a bit from manufacturer to manufacturer - until you get your wick and build a few coils of various inside diameters... I wouldn't worry too much about how many will fit that coil. With cotton... you can make any diameter and density you choose.

It's all about individual experimentation... and you will be joining that club. ;-)

Ahh thanks, i'll order some when I find supplier and experiment! Just need to wait for my vamo from fasttech... its somewhere on the planet at the minute ha :D

At least it's clarified a few things, I will probably grab a multimeter at somepoint to test it out. I like electronics so it some seems natural to lend my hand to this sort of stuff too :)

Next step, start cooking up my own liquids... that'll be another experience for another day :)

If you're getting a Vamo, just remember that it will not go lower than 1.2ohms. So if you get a 28AWG wire, you have to use multiple wraps (more so if you're doing a micro-coil). I suggest getting a 32 or 30 AWG. For wicks, the best I've tried so far is the German silica wick (you can find it in eBay and it looks loosely wrapped). Some prefer Ekowool so it will not fray easily. a 2mm wick is just about right for wicks but at times I prefer 3mm so that it can soak in more juice and I wont have to drip often.
