Hello,

I am new to this forum. I don't smoke, but I am learning on making ejuice for my boyfriend who does. He uses a Kanger Pro tank 2.

I made a 50/50 VG/PG juice, and it was not wicking properly. It would bubble and he said it was burning out his coils fast. I then made a 70VG/30PG mixture and that one burnt out a brand new coil instantly. I heated the juice in a crockpot to help it steep and left for a couple days before having him try it. I'm mainly using TFA tobacco flavorings and then just basic PG, VG and Nicotine (all USP grade)

The juices are bubbling and just leaking out. Hot oil will also shoot out onto the tongue. It just destroys his coils and I'm at a loss on what I'm doing wrong. Store bought juices wick fine, so I don't quite think it's the coils.

Thanks so much for any input you might have!

Equipment: Kanger protank 2, Vision Spinner 2000.

It doesn't sound like it's the juice. I have a Kanger aerotank, and I used 100% vg (minus whatever pg is in the flavor) with no trouble. I am using 50/50 now, and that's fine too. It might have something to do with the ohms of the coil plus the voltage , in other words, the wattage. Each juice has its own best wattage to burn at.

I'm sure you'll get more sage advice than mine though.

Here's some things to check (troubleshooting):

When putting in a new coil, make sure to screw it snugly into the base. Make sure all the gaskets are in place. Clean off the battery's contact. If you have a volt meter you should check the battery's output with the tank off. If it's a variable voltage battery it should read whatever voltage it's set at. If not, it should read 4.2 volts fully charged. Good luck!

Cheers,
Steve

I have problems with the PT using coil heads of less than 2.2 ohms. I use VG-juices, and must use about 2.5 ohm coils. That is for stock coil heads. I can get away with lower ohms if I recoil with 32 ga using Ekowool silica rope as the wick. I think stock coils are choking their wicks and keeping juice from wicking to the coil properly. This is a consistent problem I have with the PT. I also use very low wattage with them in general. They are easy to over-vaporize the juice for the amount refeeding from wicking. Just my experience.

If you are not recoiling (yet), and are using low resistance heads, try higher resistance heads. In my experience, they do run hot. With my juices, 1.8 ohms on a regular Ego battery at 3.7V will burn.

If the coils are spurting and bubbling then to much juice is leaking into the coil chamber. Check the coil top seal and make sure the double wick is in place. If he's rebuilding the coils or taking off the top stack to clean it then he is unknowingly flushing away the top wick. He needs to replace that top wick every time he cleans or recoils with 2mm silica wick.

Also if he's going to continue to vape 70vg/30PG you must add distilled water to the mix. 4% DW is good for 70/30. A 50/50 mix should be fine if the coil is wicked properly and the seals are intact. Also a good voltage range for the kanger pro/t3/s is 3.3 to 3.7v. I find anything higher will start getting a burnt taste.

Thanks to everyone for their replies! Good to know it wasn't my juice ruining things instantly. He isn't rebuilding coils. He's using the Kanger pro tank 2 coils that they sell in packs of 5. He did put it at the highest voltage, so that will probably need to be adjusted. I purchased a cheap cartomizer for him to test flavors instead of putting his coils in jeopardy again (Since he's still annoyed with me for that).

I don't know what mod he's using, if any. He just has the vision spinner 2000 and a pro tank 2.

The reason I went up to 70/30 VG/PG is because we thought it was too thin which is why it was bubbling. He prefers throat hit, so upping PG will probably be a good idea, to make it thinner anyways. Would 60 PG/ 40 VG be too thin? Should he just vape it at a lower voltage?

The resistance of the coils is currently at 2.5, the highest I believe. That is what we got in the store yesterday. I will make small batches of a few juices to see if they work in the cartomizer well, and then into his tank if he likes it enough.

Side question: He likes tobacco flavors exclusively. How do I get more throat hit? My vapor production is quite good, but the throat hit is lacking. Will mixing in more PG fix the problem? Thanks so much!

Those stock heads are junk...

Silica won't wick for crap because they wind the wire around it too tight and chokes it to death.

You will need to run 80/20VG with the stock PT2 heads or the wick will burn.

No chain vaping, the wick will burn.

Go above 3.5v and the wick will burn.

Turn upside down, give a shake back and forth, turn upright, look for bubbles (good thing).

Take a small needle and fluff up the end of each wick really well, it helps to stop the flooding.

I almost quit vaping and went back to analogs because of all this hassle, grr.

Started rebuilding all mine with 30 A1 kanthal, micro-coil 1.8 ohm, organic cotton balls, 4 volts.

No burning, flooding or gurgling, can run 80/20 to 50/50, no flavor wicks either.

And I can run my tanks dry without flooding.

So, the short answer is, no it's not your juice:D

The first thing I do with a new Kanger coil is to pull out the wicks and thread through organic cotton. It wicks so much better and there is no need for the top "flavor wick" with cotton.

As others have said, Kanger coils are crappy at best and much improved when rebuilt. But I've found that even the rebuilt ones will not tolerate much above 4.0v without burning and a vision spinner goes up to 4.8v.

It's none of my business, of course, but your boyfriends annoyance is misplaced. It is kind of you to be mixing for him and his issues are user error/equipment related. I hope you are waited on with breakfast in bed in return! :)

I use the vision spinner for my kangers and always leave it on the lowest setting. It's true that the out of the box coils are not the greatest and I do rebuild mine so I may be biased but I do get very good results and they are my go to when I'm on the go but for at home vaping I use a kayfun RBA. The highest voltage setting on a spinner is far to high for the Kangers. It's his fault and not yours and I think he owes you an apology:) I also second breakfast in bed.

As far as throat hit 50/50 mix is good. The higher the PG and NIC content the more throat hit you will have. Also if he's a recent ex-smoker and is looking for that lick the bottom of a dirty ash tray taste that delivers throat hit just like real cigarettes provide I would recommend the Hangsen red USA flavoring at 7%. I would also recommend any of the hangsen tobaccos if he's a tobacco lover.

Haha I'd love breakfast in bed! If only!

I'm going to test a 50pg/50vg next. I'm worried about the coils leaking. I guess something else for me to learn would be rebuilding those darn coils :( It's endless with this stuff! I wish it would work perfectly just out of the box. I make 18 mg or 20 mg juices for him.

For flavorings, I got mostly TFA flavors which was offered with my starter kit. I also have MTS Wizard something.. and Commercial Cigarette from seedmans.

Thanks to everyone again. I believe there are guides for rebuilding these coils correct? Is it terribly difficult? (I should hope I can figure it out though... I would be a terrible engineering student if I couldn't!)

Rebuilding isn't hard. I know it can seem overwhelming at first, but it doesn't take long at all to get used to it. There are plenty of videos on youtube on building coils for PTs.
I like a good throat hit too, and I use 80pg/20vg in my PTs (with no problems with leaking at all).

Lots of utube videos that show how to make micro coils, and/or regular ones.

I got 50' of Kanthal (A-1, 30GA) resistance wire off fleabay pretty cheap.

Bag of Organic Cotton Balls from Wallgreens for a few bucks.

Got a little butane torch from Harbor Freight for about 7-9 bucks. (It's to heat the wire up so it's less springy)
(And to heat the coil red hot whilst squeezing it together with tweezers) (It helps to make the coil wraps stay tight together)

The supplies really don't cost very much, and will last a long time.

It's quite easy once ya do a few, and I've even seen some of the ladies do it:p
