Hello everyone!! I'm a new vapor and brand new to forums, so bare with me as I learn.

I am attempting to learn how to rebuild coils for my protank 2. I have watched tons of videos and have a few questions.

1.)I notice in the videos that each user has a different number of coil wraps ...does this effect the ohms count? i.e. 4 wraps=2.2 ohms, 8 wraps = 1.8 ohms ...etc. What's the difference between a regular coil & micro? Noticed some peeps using that term when rebuilding

2.)Some re-builders use 28 gauge Kanthal wire, some 29 gauge, some 32 gauge? Can some one explain the wire gauges to me and what they mean?

I bought a small amount of 28 gauge Kanthal wire and 2mm Silica wick to learn.

3.)is there a difference in performance using Silica vs Cotton?
4.) Do you have to torch the coil after building?

Thanks for reading my questions...I love my ecig and I'm 5 weeks into vaping and have all but stopped smoking :)

Welcome to the forum, Kay. You will find a lot of fine folks and information here.

There is some initial things in electronics one needs to understand before they attempt to build coils. A lot of them you can find in this thread. Ohm's law is the law in coil building. Read the links in the above and I'm sure your initial questions will be answered.

Best of luck on your quest to quit.

Welcome to ECF :D Yes, the amount of wraps in a coil has a direct impact on the resistance (ohms). The more wraps, the more surface area/wire used in the coil and therefore the higher the resistance. It's basically about the distance of wire used and, of course, more wraps equal more distance and therefore more resistance. The gauge of the wire also effects the resistance achieved.

Microcoils are very tightly wrapped coils - each wrap will be touching (or will be extremely close). With Microcoils, there is less wire used than a standard coil but there are more wraps around the wick, which can sometimes provide a boost in performance, perhaps occasionally even at a comparable level of performance to that of sub-ohm Vaping.

2.)Some re-builders use 28 gauge Kanthal wire, some 29 gauge, some 32 gauge? Can some one explain the wire gauges to me and what they mean?

I bought a small amount of 28 gauge Kanthal wire and 2mm Silica wick to learn.

The gauge of the wire is essentially just the thickness of it. As with the amount of wraps used in a coil, the gauge of the wire will change the resistance. Some gauges are also quite a bit easier to work with than others.

3.)is there a difference in performance using Silica vs Cotton?

Some say that Cotton is better at wicking than silica, which will reduce the chance of getting dry hits and other wicking problems. However, you'll see on forums that there's a lot of debate around the topic and it is mostly a matter of personal opinion/taste. YMMV.

4.) Do you have to torch the coil after building?

Sometimes you will need to torch a coil after a rebuild to cause some oxidisation to the coil.

Thanks for reading my questions...I love my ecig and I'm 5 weeks into vaping and have all but stopped smoking :)

It's brilliant, isn't it?!

1) the different number of wraps does effect the ohm count, for ex: 4 wraps= .8 ohms, 8 wraps= 1.6 ohms. A regular coil tends to be wrapped 4/5 times while a micro coil is wrapped about 10 times.

2) the higher the gauge wire the thinner it is, and the thinner the wire the higher ohm resistance, for ex: 28 gauge=.448 ohms, 32= 1.14 ohms (for instance if you were to wrap a 28 gauge wire 10 times you would get a 1.4 ohm read, while if you wrap a 32 gauge wire 10 times you would get a 2.4 ohm read)

3) The difference in performance between the two is:
Cotton: better taste, more vapor produced, but burns quicker
Silica: Longer lasting (doesnt burn as fast), but might get a plastic-y taste
-Its all personal preference so you should experiment with the two

4) You do not have to torch the coil after building, but it does help. All it does is keep the wire in its shape, and even people torch it before a build to get the "Spring-y-niss" out of the wire which could help for building.

Good luck hope this helped!
