I've just started getting an intermittent burnt taste, and a a decrease in vapor production. Still getting vapor but not the right amount. Does that mean I need to clean the tank or does it mean I need to replace the atomizer? I've only had it a few weeks and not been using it very heavily, I can't believe I'd have to replace the coil assembly already.

It depends on what juice your using. If it's a dark one, then the coils will gunk up faster.

some fast dry burns and a good soak in PGA or vodka for a few hours followed by a warm rinse may help a lot.
Could be one of these things, OR simply too hot of a burn. Try a higher resistance coil or turn down the heat if U have VV. 
whoa, pull the throttle back on the techno talk. just because his watcha-ma-callit may be messing with the thingamabob while he uses the whutzatthar doesnt mean we need to scare him away with complex overly technical terms.
If you've been using it a few weeks and haven't cleaned it yet, you're probably long overdue. I clean my tanks about every 4-5 topoffs. The juice starts getting kinda nasty at that point and it's well worth it to start over fresh. The tanks are easy to clean. There's a video on this forum somewhere - just use the search.
