I'm looking for a 'perfected' French Vanilla coffee that's DYI... does anyone have one...? ;)

I'm steeping some real coffee here from Dunkin' Donuts and was wondering what others recipes were... obviously, mine would be different but, was wondering what percentages of what you used in yours to get what you prefer.

I have the TFA_French Vanilla flavoring i'm using as my base flavoring...

a good coffee flavor of any kind seems elusive and 'coffee is hard' seems to be the number one statement in a lot of coffee threads. What I often see recommended is extracting your own, like you're doing. The next step is finding a good vanilla and that's not all that easy either. You might have better luck extracting your own vanilla as well.

There's a thread here started by tomzgreat that contains a link to Cooks. Eight dollars for 4oz, but if you also use vanilla in cooking that might be worth exploring. The name of the thread is ' DIY- Organic Simple is Best -- Also Cooks Vanilla Flavors is a Contender in the Natural Market'.

In fact, we do have some raw Vanilla beans here so, will have to do some research about the extraction process of those. Sounds like a pretty fun challenge to take on...
By the way, if the coffee part of the extraction comes out like it's looking it will, i'll post exactly how I did it. I too have noticed that a 'decent' coffee flavor is elusive. I tried a pre-made coffee extract from Watkins and BLEH, it tasted more like pure instant coffee with a burnt flavor. (seriously WOULDN'T recommend it personally)

Not sure if you guys have access to WOW Flavors in the States, but they have an awesome coffee flavor, Sweetened French Roast. It is the closest to real coffee I have ever tried.

Danoman, I've extracted 3 different coffees so far. First one was a Pete's Coffee cafe solano which has a creamy taste to it, the second and third coffees are dark mocha and caramel truffle. iirc, vanilla is extracted the same way, which I'll be doing this weekend as I love a good vanilla too!

I've mixed the first extract at 10% which is a bit light. I mixed the dark mocha tonight at 3% (it's a stronger coffee) with 2% bavarian cream and 1% caramel. It came out creamy with a hint of coffee and barest taste of caramel. It is vapable right now (needs more coffee and less caramel) but I will wait a few days to see how it ends up.

But...subscribed as I love me some vanilla!

That's a great idea (I didn't think of that) with taking some pre-flavored coffee to do in a steeping process. THANKS...!!!

Update on the coffee extracts. The coffee taste in the Mocha lightened up even more to the point of being undetectable. I can taste the Bavarian cream but not much else. I slowly added drops to it and finally got to the point where I get a distinct taste in a dripper, but it's >25% !! And even that amount is kinda light tasting. I'm gonna let it sit for a few more days and try again. I've yet to mix up the caramel but hope to get to it this weekend while I try vanilla extraction.

Agavehound, sounds like you have a winner in your hands... Finding the perfect mix for good coffee, caramel, vanilla/cocoa is quite a feat.

Well, it's not perfect but it's good enough to duplicate and minor tweaks are easy enough. Now I know what people mean when they use the phrase 'flavor chaser'.

Starting DIY has likely been the best move I've made yet because I KNOW that eventually I'll find that elusive 'must have' liquid. And since it COULD be the next try...I'll keep trying.
