I guess I'm going to have to die sooner than I thought.

I'm talking about e-liquid. The first DIY I made was something I came up with myself, using the few flavours I had on hand - watermelon, peach, pina colada, vanilla custard. It had a smooth, rounded, creamy taste that was/(is?) so refreshing it had me going back to it time and again. It became my ADV. Then I read about diacetyl. I changed my brand of vanilla custard and since then, every mix has been a disappointed. Gone is the lush creaminess.... and I started getting an aftertaste that I simply did not like. I was starting to get a little depressed, questioning whether I would actually be able to stick to vaping if even my most favourite juice was not giving me any satisfaction. Today I found an old bottle of my ADV which I had mixed in early June - ah yes! that is the juice as I remember it!

I've taken the decision - I'm going back to the diacetyl laced flavours. If I'm going to die anyway, at least I will die happy.

Off the grid
Suffocating isn't a happy death. (That's if the popcorn lung thing is something we eventually have to face)
As an experiment, I've replaced all my Diacetyl laden ingredients with DX versions. I replaced Vanilla Custard with Vanilla Swirl in one combo and the only thing I noticed is its a little lighter and took a couple more days to become creamy.
But as usual, I encourage people to do as they please. I am struggling with the same thing since I have a 4oz bottle of Vanilla Custard sitting in my closet.

Purchase a bottle of Kiss The Ring by Bombies (Bombies He just had his whole line tested, and thankfully this delicious Custard flavor checked out as safe! Perhaps it can serve as spring board in your DIY adventures. Personally? Only the most guilty vendors (Five Pawns: Ultimate Pawn etc) contained levels of Diacetyl that warranted my concern. Many other flavors that had it were orders of magnitude lower in content compared to what was found in the most guilty of the liquid tested by vapor shark.

Good for you.

I have lived long enough to have heard ALL of the different things that are bad for you until someone decided that it wasn't really bad. I decided that most of those scares were made by someone that had found a way to make money off of it. I recall at one point eggs were the worst thing a person could eat (egg beaters anyone?). That is just one example of the many that have been out there. I decided listening to all that bunk was detrimental to my health.

I eat what I want and will vape what tastes good to me and if it happens to take a few minutes off my life, so be it.

I just can't find it in myself to work up too much worry about Diacetyl. I will change my mind when something definitive comes out or if I start hearing stories about people getting sick. As of now, there's just nothing other than problems in industrial settings -and that's just not enough to scare me. The thing is, we get these kinds of scares all the time. Especially, it seems, around things that are alternatives to unhealthy things. Look at the scare around artificial sweeteners and GMOs. There is no basis around the claims made but that doesn't stop people from freaking out. I've learned to be guided by the science when it comes to finding things to worry about.

I'll certainly monitor my health and be sure to check pulmonary function regularly.

Op, I'm 61 and 100% agree.

There is -0- documentation stating it WILL cause any harm at low levels.
People treat this like:
LEAD = Lolli-pops
DI = Shotgun Blast

For me PERSONALLY, there is a huge difference in a FACTORY worker slaving over Vats of raw materials 8hrs. a day and me using a flavoring that may contain minute particle count.

Diacetyl has been linked to and referenced in possibly contributing to Popcorn Lung. This means there are other requirements for this to happen.
If ANYONE wishes to argue, I ask where are the tens of thousands of victims of Exposure?

I Agree on Full disclosure
I Respect Personal Choice

Here we go again.

I'm 61 as well, almost 62. I've done a lot of potentially dangerous things in my life... I'm still here to talk about them. :)

There are as many scares as there are myths about miracle foods. @mattiem has already mentioned eggs. Then there was the story about shrimp being laden with cholesterol which turned out to me a mistake by a Japanese researcher. Then there was the myth about dark chocolate which was supposed to be a miracle food..... it turned out recently that was a joke invented by a journalist to see how gullible people could be.

Of course I don't want this to be taken as a negation of potential harm in diacetyl... I'm just saying that for ME the DX versions are not working.

I've largely ignored the diacetyl issue and so know little about it, but to my mind it smacks a bit of an ANTZ scare tactic, which it may well turn out to be. I suspect that compared to the thousands of noxious and poisonous chemicals in cigarettes, which are still legally sold everywhere, it's a very small and petty issue. I make my own juice, so it's not something I concern myself with. I think perhaps there is more reason for concern over the 5 pound chuck roast I have in the oven right now. No doubt there are paid-for studies that would declare that a huge threat to my health, pursuant to someone's political or economic agenda, and I don't care. You can buy a study that says anything you want, for enough money.

For some people, replacing diketones with something else is like replacing regular Pepsi with diet Pepsi. Personally I can't drink diet anything but some people love the taste.

I offer you two incontrovertible facts (I believe) regarding diketones...

1. People have been vaping diketones for over 6 years now and to the best of my knowledge no vaper has ever been diagnosed with popcorn lung, or, for that matter, diagnosed with any vaping related lung damage of any kind, regardless of eJuice content.

2. The next 200 posts to this thread will argue certain death, and somehow avoid the discussion of #1 like the plague

LOL, carry on :)

TFA Whipped Cream is a "safe" flavor. I use it with the DX/V2/etc stuff to get some creaminess back. It's not the yummy, buttery goodness I miss, but it helps. I try to avoid the "evil DA/AP" flavors when I can, but I am working on a couple of clones of my old faves and there's just no way around it. I'm not overly concerned with dieing of an obscure lung disease, but I can make a lot of yummy flavors without the stuff, so either way I'm happy.

I agree with you. I'm 72, and 4 some years ago when I quit the cigs and started vaping, I was diagnosed with mild COPD. I haven't noticed it getting any worse, so at this point I'm not going to worry about the diacetyl. Maybe if I were 20 - 30 yrs. younger I might worry a little.

I looked into this, and confirmed my original suspicions about the issue. What I found was that:

  • The quantities of diacetyl discovered in e-cigarettes have been, on average, 100 times lower than those found in traditional tobacco smoke. Another similar chemical, acetyl propionyl, has been discovered at levels 10 times lower than traditional cigarettes.
  • Although smoking kills hundreds of thousands of people each year, traditional cigarettes HAVE NEVER been associated with popcorn lung.

So as I suspected it's an overblown issue that can safely be ignored if you don't work in a microwave popcorn plant. We now return you to your regularly scheduled issue.

If I were in your position, I'd DIY a flavor and name it "Diacetyl-Delicious." The best flavor known to man!

Congrats on dropping the cigs! Many fail to realize that vaping is an option for any person looking to quit!
