Being unemployed isn't fun.
Not having money isn't fun.
vaping is fun, and the #1 cure to stay vaping while out of cash is to stock up when you do have cash.
But what to buy for longevity?
Well, I'm both a cheapskate and unemployed, so I'll tell you, in a series of categories and price ranges to fit your budget... to fit anyone's budget.

1. Power Supplies!

You can't vape without power, that's an obvious thought. What power is best for your buck? I've been at this for a while with different power-sources and I've come to a few good conclusions.

#1. 14500 Batteries

If you've got a cheap mod box, these things come 2 for $5 from any online chinese store. Stock up and keep them charged. They last nearly all day for most people and keep their life for a long time. Make sure if you're used to a 5v vape to pick up some low-resistance equipment that we'll discuss later but for the price, these can't be beat bang for your buck-wise.

#2. A Passthrough

You can get a good cheap passthrough from most websites for around $15 but don't expect them to last, even the good ones. You're almost constantly handling the wiring which means it will eventually short out within a few months to a year, you never really know. While reliable when first used, take care to keep backups on you if they begin to fade out.

#3. Keep a standard socket.

If you have adapters, keep them but stick to the same socket. I tend to stick with 510 everything. This means all of my passthroughs and boxes all universally fit all of my atomizers and cartomizers. You don't want to be caught spending more money on a device that uses something different than the rest.

2. The Vapor-Maker!

Atomizers cost around $8 each when not bought in bulk and you never know when one will short out on you. While they generally do last a long time. I've found a viable solution for the cheapskate vaper.

#1. CE2 Cartomizers being used as Atomizers

$10 for 5 of these puppies will keep you going. They're built just like atomizers and carry the same punch. If you lose one, don't fret, you've got four more left in the box to cycle through. Just pop them open and clip off the wicks and you've got the best cheap atomizers money can be skimped on.

Also, clean your equipment regularly and rotate around 5 cartomizers at a time to keep you going. Clean them all at once with your method of choice to keep them running like new and be careful not to pop them while dry-burning.

3. Juice!

So you want to vape cheaply? There's a few good websites for picking up cheap juice. Madvapes sells Dekang from china for excellent deals all the time. There's also FreedomsmokeUSA and MyFreedomSmokes who also sell at generally lower prices than the competition and FreedomsmokeUSA even sells in, wait for it... 120ML bottles!! Buy in bulk if possible to keep your prices down, and if you don't like it, don't waste your cash and toss it, trade it on the forum! You might find someone willing to pick it up so you can get something else.

---------

Finding a job is tough but getting you through the hard times is all about preparation. Keep back-stock. Keep backups of your hardware going so you don't have to rely on paycheck to paycheck purchases. :2cool:

I'm a little a disappointed that somehow one the largest ways to save money is not even mentioned in this post.

Enter Contests.....After all free is as good as it will ever get. Simply take 10 minutes and go through the sub-forums. Personally I am not a big fan of Prize Piggies, those that only enter contests and never contribute, support, or add any valued input towards other members. But these are hard economic times for many and as long as it is available one should take advantage of it.

Like this thread :) The unemployment check only goes so far.... and Iw ould hate to see how much more broke I would be at $5/day for analogs.

And true about the contests, I have entered a few. And yippy for me getting to the point in vaping where I am now able to offer some advice (still being a n00b sucks).

Another thing is like how friendly the folks are here. :2cool: I haven't had to worry about asking a "dumb" question. Folks want to pass on their own mistake so other people won't make the same ones :)

I likes your .....cat avatar!

I have decided, despite the 5 post rule, that I will be a noob for my entire first year of vaping. There is always new stuff to learn about hardware. And new stuff to learn about yourself as you go through some good changes.

You have already learned, as little experience as you may think you have, you can rapidly pay it forward to someone else. That's what makes this board so great. All levels of experience, all levels of questions, all levels of answers needed.

Don't forget modding! :D I've made VV box mods for under $20. You can make a box mod running off of NiMH batteries (the rechargeable batteries that you can buy anywhere) even cheaper. If you have a dead PV battery (slim 510, eGo or the like) you can salvage the atty connector from it and pick everything else up at Radio Shack.

Love this thread!

I've been strapped with money just paying the bills, losing half of my income and no I won't bore all of you with the details. Luckily I stocked up on a great vendor juice, atty's (I've been poor before, so know how important it is to stock up) and I kept my vaping simple. I only use atty's and only 510 or 306's; my black/chrome SilverBullet (I affectionately call DarkHelmet) and that's it. I have not had to buy anything vapey for about four months and due to replenish my supplies right around tax season. This is when I will also start DIYing my juice, which is perfect because I know my return will cover the cost to keep me vaping for a year if I shop smart.

Which should have been on the list; shopping smart! Compare prices! Break down the cost of juice per ml, same with flavorings and compare things like batteries, atty's, carto's, etc. next to each other. Or if you don't want to go through all that trouble, make up shopping carts at each vendor and compare what you are getting next to each one and include the shipping (I over estimate by figuring $10 if they don't list it). See how much you can get at one vendor so you don't have to pay for multiple shipping costs or get it free! And don't forget to search for discount codes! I follow quite a few vendors on twitter, I've put them in their own list so when I can start shopping, I can search there as well. Not every vendor has discount codes, but quite a few do and I do seem to remember there's a thread here on ECF that also lists quite a few of them.

Anyways, that's my :2c: and I apologize it was so long.

GeekyGirl is right about comparing prices. Worth it to compare and add in the costs of shipping. Sometimes you can find a price that can cover what would be spent in shipping costs from another vendor.

DIY costs do bring the cost of vaping even lower. However it's a big layout at the start up to get the nic juice base. Going to WalMart to get a few bottles of VG will save shipping costs. $20 for a gallon of PG at Tractor Supply is more PG than you can shake a stick at, and once again no shipping costs.

I found a country store about 30 mins away that has a huge selection of LorAnn flavorings. I'd actually need to try to break down th2 price of gas vs shipping but it's nice to know that the basic cost is about 1/4 of what I would pay for a dram bottle at CVS ($1.40 vs $4).

C.A.V.E. = Cheap A$$ed Vaping Engineering :)

Next time I go to the store where I got the LorAnns from I should take a pic or write down the flavors they have. Wouldn't mind picking some extra up if anyone wants some. Only thing I would wonder would the shipping from post office to a residential addy negate the savings?

I don't know if any of you use search and win sites, but if times are tough it's a great way to get free amazon gift cards to purchase some of your vaping supplies.

If you have never heard of search and win, you likely think it's some scam bs-just like I did at first. I was first introduced to it several years ago. I had finally been able to buy that 1st generation kindle I longed for (yeah we're going back a few years) and started reading all the kindle forums to learn as much as I could. I kept seeing people saying they were using their "swagbucks" to buy their ebooks. Well I finally saw it enough times that I figured I needed to find out more info. I ended up joining and within six months I had racked up almost 250 bucks of credit with amazon. I also joined another site - zoombucks, so I was pulling in from both of them. There are others as well, but these were the only two I joined. Now mind you, it took a lot of time out of my day. But if you're unemployed you've got a lot more time then I had.

Eventually I stopped doing it as much, I go through spurts with it. I'm in an "on" spurt right now since I found out about the android app which is helping me pull in the swagbucks without much time or effort at all. I'm averaging about $25 bucks a month currently with amazon gift cards. It's not a ton of money, but hey~ it is free money. Since I'm only working part time now and money is tight, I am using it mostly to purchase my pet food and litter in bulk. However, amazon does have stuff that vapers can use-hence my decision to post this info in this thread. Hopefully it will help someone out to ease the financial burden a little bit.

Here are some of the vape supplies you can pick up from amazon.

E- cigar

Joye 510 manual battery

E-Liquid

And DIY supplies:

Loranns

Capellas

Faerie's Finest

Sweetener

Gallon of PG

Gallon of VG

You can also get smaller sizes of the PG and VG, as well as syringes and other mixing supplies. The prices may or may not be higher than the usual sources we buy from, but if your getting it with free money-who cares?

If you want to know more about how to use swagbucks feel free to shoot me a pm and I'll help you out as much as I can.

DIY is big. Even early on I was making high flavor DIY at $4/30ml (all in, includes shipping and handling for everything) at 24 mg/ml. Since I've found what I like, catch sales, bigger bottles of what works for me, now my running cost is under $3/30ml, and about $2 for really low nic things. I appreciate commercial eliquids, particularly some of the really nice concoctions from the smaller artisan vendors, and DIY isn't for everyone, but if you can DIY it really cuts costs.

I know or me i am horrible at wasting money going back and ordering more thing or mre of the same a doubling shipping costs. Put it in your cart a let it steep..then make surebit really i all you want for now and the immediate future from that vendor. If you need more thn you can afford today wait until you can buy it all t once its worth the cost os a box of lr attys.

This is really hard or me to stick too...haven't yet.

I recently went through a time where I ran completely out of liquid. I found Glycerin(100% VG) and a couple LorAnn's flavoring at the local pharmacy. My very first DIY e-liquid experience. It wasn't as great as my regular e-liquid, and it was nic-free, but it did the trick to get me by for a week, until I got my first check from my new job.
