Pulling too hard on a coil that isn't heated enough causing the excess juice to boil and not vaporize. That can be caused by unbalanced airflow.
The coil is getting worn, thus the carbon cocoon is using up the heat so again just boiling the juice.
The pulling too hard can pull excess juice onto the coil, not being vaporized and pooling so your sucking up juice like a straw. Some like to blow down to remove the excess juice but that just makes a mess that could get down into the electronics of a hitter. Depends on the atty, turn it upside down so the juice comes out the driptip then twist up a paper towel to get the remaining juice.
Back in my clearo, protank and kayfun days when I got some spitback I laid a piece of 1 or 2mm silica across the top of the coil...problem solved. Those were called flavor wicks that came stock in the old PT heads but haven't used flavor wicks in eons.
A older dying, discharging or crappy clone battery(s) don't have the umph it needs to properly fire a coil especially if your trying to fire a nasty subohm or multiwire build using a single battery hitter. I found anything over 30 watts using a single battery hitter the performance craps out. Worse if your first heating up the cocoon all the initial pulse is used up and nothing left for vaporizing...back to boiling the juice.
I've been tasting a couple drops of juice on the back of the hand for years, thats how I determine the atty taste, just smelling the juice is very deceptive cause the great smell can taste YUK in both the back of the hand or atty.
All great observations. Q-tips are useful too in a pinch for clearing the airway without driving juice down to the 510 connect (or causing even more draw from the tank). Also pull the drip tip and clear what's there so it doesn't drip back down the chute.
Also opening up the airflow and adding power slightly can sometimes help deal with over saturation. Tanks are fun. In a dripper, dab the wick/s for any excess or denser juice with a tissue, add a couple of drops of VG to re-prime and you're good to go.
Good luck.
