Pulling too hard on a coil that isn't heated enough causing the excess juice to boil and not vaporize. That can be caused by unbalanced airflow.
The coil is getting worn, thus the carbon cocoon is using up the heat so again just boiling the juice.
The pulling too hard can pull excess juice onto the coil, not being vaporized and pooling so your sucking up juice like a straw. Some like to blow down to remove the excess juice but that just makes a mess that could get down into the electronics of a hitter. Depends on the atty, turn it upside down so the juice comes out the driptip then twist up a paper towel to get the remaining juice.
Back in my clearo, protank and kayfun days when I got some spitback I laid a piece of 1 or 2mm silica across the top of the coil...problem solved. Those were called flavor wicks that came stock in the old PT heads but haven't used flavor wicks in eons.
A older dying, discharging or crappy clone battery(s) don't have the umph it needs to properly fire a coil especially if your trying to fire a nasty subohm or multiwire build using a single battery hitter. I found anything over 30 watts using a single battery hitter the performance craps out. Worse if your first heating up the cocoon all the initial pulse is used up and nothing left for vaporizing...back to boiling the juice.
I've been tasting a couple drops of juice on the back of the hand for years, thats how I determine the atty taste, just smelling the juice is very deceptive cause the great smell can taste YUK in both the back of the hand or atty.

All great observations. Q-tips are useful too in a pinch for clearing the airway without driving juice down to the 510 connect (or causing even more draw from the tank). Also pull the drip tip and clear what's there so it doesn't drip back down the chute.

Also opening up the airflow and adding power slightly can sometimes help deal with over saturation. Tanks are fun. In a dripper, dab the wick/s for any excess or denser juice with a tissue, add a couple of drops of VG to re-prime and you're good to go.

Good luck. :)

Spitback won't harm you but since it's slightly unpleasant, well I might try some of the suggested remedies. It can be for lots of reasons, so just keep trying stuff until it's figured out. Some tanks are worse for it than others I think, but you'll eventually hit on your "set of remedies" I am almost certain.

The bigger the chimney, the harder is the spitback, and one of the things I hate about top air tanks... If it floods, better rewick it!

Being new to vaping I'm still dealing with some of this issue. It's getting better, yet there are still times.

First off, if it's been a while like say, 30 minutes to an hour I will puff on my mtl tip without hitting the fire button. Instantly I know if the bottom flow air chamber is flooded. If so, a paper towel is placed over the airflow, then device is angled with air holes down and I blow out a second or two. Wipe it off, then fire a second or two to expel juice. That works more times than not.

Now how to prevent it is the rub. I found that slow, methodical draw works best. You get a more concentrated drag though so watch for that. I get a lot less 'leftover' using that method.
When moving from a climate control to the elements still daunts me though. So what I have found is to leave one in my vehicle so that it stays acclimated to the conditions. Not a cure, but certainly helps.

Now if the spit back is minor, that just adds to the experience. Flave-uh!!

That POP thing still freaks me out everytime. I guess I've heard "those things can explode" too many times and have gotten paranoid. Being a flashlight junkie I should know better, but yet I've never heard a POP when pushing the on button of a high powered flashlight.

Some have said tweaking the juice with distilled water can aid in efficient boiling. Sounds logical, but could easily go the wrong way it seems. Others say thicker sauce is the key. But what I have found as an M2L'r is the drag method has helped me the most. That and keeping the sauce at constant climate conditions.

Huh did not know top air was known for spit back that's interesting because the one AIO I tried (I won it) that thing popped and spit and just acted inappropriately for a LONG time. It was fixed wattage too so all I really had to experiment with was airflow and drip tips, I got it behaving finally, it actually taught me a lot about messing with your vape to get it working, as I was DETERMINED to get it working, but it was probably one of my least happy vape experiments for a couple o hours.

I have one coil that will pop, usually when new, the Joytech CLR coil. Usually when it's either breaking in or needs a wattage adjustment, it was pretty startling at first but I have come to discover that the noise won't hurt me although I was unnerved at first.

Anna,
I like the idea of the top flow style "U flow" of my Nautilis X, but it's like a popcorn machine unless I contantly do hatchet chop motions between puffs. It floods like New Orleans during hurricane season.

I'm really trying to like it. Yet one drop in breaths too free, another acts clogged all the time. I chain vape with the clogged-ish one hoping to kill it someday.

A Rover X kit is great for shirt pocket carry, but the included Nautilis X tank isn't working out for my style. Am waiting on some Kanger top tank nanos to arrive.

Some of ejuice would just spit to my mouth and I go rinse right after cuz I don't want to eat any of that.

I can’t help with advice for stopping spitback but you’ve gotten a lot of advice on this thread anyway...

Still, I feel it’s important that you know that as you vape, you are eating e-juice. Not all of it is absorbed in your lungs or mucous membranes of the mouth and nose so when you salivate and swallow what’s left goes right down to your stomach. The same was true when smoking.

So yeah, if inhaling e-juice is fine, so is swallowing a little. It’s just separate routes into the same body Drinking it will make you sick from the nicotine concentration but swallowing a bit is not likely to harm you much.

I poured unwanted e-juice down the drain once. Since then there have been sightings in Toronto of 4 crime fighting mutant turtles and a man sized talking rat.

I've seen the man sized talking rat once, but haven't even heard about the turtles. Go figure. I have to get out more

True, spitting should only be done in the dead of night, in your bathroom.

Also, do not spit around your pets some of them will EAT IT (I am talking to YOU husband AND the little dog) every time it happens I am like, "How did I become attached to this pair of savages."

I like the little dog, but there do come times where I'm like, "Please don't lick me I JUST bathed." Also, with the husband, LOL.
