Failed Nicotine test for insurance

Hi , I'm new so hope this post is in the correct forum

i just had a nurse come to my home-- sent by the insurance company to fill in an application for mortgage protection/life insurance and do a quick medical on me-this seems to be a new thing here in Ireland. As a non smoker , ocasional drinker i was happy enough to provide answers to all the questions
Anyway, all went well until she asked for a urine sample and when she tested it she gave me a very strange look. You have just come up showing that you are a smoker she said !!!
Impossible i said--i never smoked since i was born
But this test is 100% accurate she said. have you been near a smoker anytime recently
I explained that i was not with 100 miles of a smoker recently or indeed within a few months so it was impossible for me to have inhaled any smoke

She was unable to re take the test as she had run out of the special swabs so she is coming back on saturday
I wonder what went wrong there and i'm gobsmacked to say the least !!

I was thinking the samething. By reading the Thread title I though for sure rusty was going to say I don't smoke regular cigarettes, but I use e-cigs.

Nicotine is in Tobacco, but it is also naturally occurring in potatoes, bell peppers and several other food items. I can't remember them all right now, but if you search Nicotine I'm sure you can find the list. It is also used as a pesticide so may be showing up in harvested foods. Hope it helps.

The urine test is to test for continine in the urine ... a by-product of nicotine consumption. Vapers will test positive for continine.

Wonderful! I am sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo tired of his condescending attitude, nasty looks, and nasty remarks. I could easily sink to his level - there's an area where he could focus on bettering his own health - but I don't roll that way. I much prefer being kind, helpful, encouraging, and supportive - when asked. I've never known a single person (myself included) who has made a life-altering change due to being bullied, humiliated, scolded, lectured, or scowled at.

However, he does enjoy "information", so I think sharing information on other sources of ingesting nicotine (which even I wasn't aware of) might at least give him something to mull over, don't you?
