I'll throw another relative newbie (and Newport smoker too) opinion into the foray. Not so much in the way of a vendor but towards the overall discussion. This turned out way longer than I intended but I think worthwhile if even one person gets value from it.
First, I would like to partially disagree with the recommendation to jump into HV and/or higher mgs (especially for a relative beginner). There are many warnings about Hv not being for beginners and I believe these are very well founded warnings. Please keep in mind that my HV experience is limited to a Puresmoker 5V PT but I have been researching HV extensively.
From my experiences, the HV does increase TH and vapor volume - no doubt. But, it also vapes much hotter which also dramatically increases (my experience) the absorption rate of e-nic. While I would have to chain vape on a 3.7 (Tornado/ego) thru half a cart at 18-24 mg to feel nic buzz, on HV I can get that feeling after 6 or 7 vape draws of 18 mg (and I'm 6'4" 230 lbs who works out 4-5x/wk). Granted, some may like the nic-buzz. Personally, I am working to find a comfortable balance of vaping enjoyment with little to none (at least during prime time functionality). Jumping into unregulated HV mods that can be vaping at 6 volts or higher can have other risks too. I am NOT saying "don't" just do more research and proceed with caution. There IS such a thing as nic OD (yea, over-dose). I doubt it would be rush to hospital but could include heart palpitations, nervousness, difficulty concentrating...
Additionally, I am learning (both from experience and from posts and correspondence with forum "Experts" - ATE) there are other factors which are not often discussed. VG burns at a lower temp so VG juices can get more of a flavor degradation at higher voltage. I find my "flavors" taste much better at lower volts while tobacco and menthols stand up to the HV much better. My PG juices also stand up better to HV
Another point about voltage that I am just beginning to learn is that the overall vaping experience can be more a function of Watts than Volts. While I am no electrician, I will copy in some info from one of the ATEs:
The Bart is going to be stronger than either the Tornado or the GG slim, and the Tornado will be about the same as the GG, but last longer. The only math that really matters here is
watts = volts*volts/ohms
The watts are the power (heat generated). Volts is the potential the heating element (coil) experiences, and is a function of the battery type (these are all 3.7V Li-ion, but there are 3.0V Li-Fe batts), as well as the circuitry between the batt and the coil, like swiches, resisters, etc. The Tornado coil feels 3.1V, not the full 3.7V. So does a regular 510 batt, as well as the 510 mega batt.
The ohms is the resistance of the coil, and depends on the atty itself. Regular 510 attys are about 2.5 ohms. Low resistance attys are about 1.8 ohms. High voltage attys are high resistance, and are about 4.5 ohms or more. The DSE510 "washer-type" 510 attys are about 3.0 ohms.
For my Bart, which is a true 3.7V PV, using 2.5 ohm attys,
power = 3.7V*3.7V/2.5 ohms = 5.5 watts
Your Tornado with the same atty,
power = 3.1V*3.1V/2.5 ohms = 3.7 watts
This is actually the same as with a regular 510 batt, but it lasts much longer.
Once you think in terms of watts, you will be able to fine tune not only what you are looking for, but also what you have. I happen to love 5.5W. Its stronger than regular/mega batts, and attys stay healthier longer because the somewhat higher heat keeps them unclogged more...that's a biggie for me since I vape only VG juices.
What would happen if you put on an LR atty to your tornado? watts = 3.1*3.1/1.8 = 5.2 watts. This would make the tornado almost as strong as the Bart, or other 14500 battery box mods (14500 is a 3.7V battery the same size as a AA, 10440 is the same size as a AAA). The LR atty will of course drain your batt faster.
Your 5V PT with a 2.5 ohm 510 atty:
watts = 5*5/2.5 = 10 watts. Thats too much for me, but some people love it.
Your 5V PT with HV attys:
watts = 5*5/4.5 =5.6 watts. That combo would be a winner for me.
As I had been intensely researching for a regulated 5V mod, and seen pretty much everything "out there", I found this information illuminating. I have now chosen to go with the Bart box mod as my next device for all of the reasons posted. I very much enjoy vaping on my 5V PT but it IS STRONG and kills some of my juices. I find I only want to drip on the HV (and I am not a drip fan) to slow me down. The more I get into vaping, I am finding there are different devices and different juices and different combinations of devices and juices for different times of the day and different occasions/circumstances.
As an almost former Newport smoker (30 years) - now at 1 to 2 analogs a day and not really enjoying the taste anymore - YEA!!! I have been trying every menthol I can get my hands on. I have found a bunch that I like but no all day vapes yet. Still waiting to try Halo - seen good and not so good reviews. So far, the closest to Newports has been YNDK (Dekang) neuport but I've heard good things about NHaler NUport and have some on order. TW's menthol (Red Label) is nice. BUT, so far my nicest vape is Tasty Vapor's Tobacco menthol. Now TV's juices are mixed FRESH and apparently need time to "steep" The Spearmint flavors I got from Geoff are STRONG out of the box so they are now steeping. THe T/M is a doubler (at 40%VG) so I am experimenting with different mixtures and even adding bits of other menthols to play with it (have some crystals in the mail too).
Overall, I would strongly suggest proceeding into HV with true caution, buy small (5ml) bottles of juice from a variety of vendors to try lots of juices and then trade on the swap forums and/or social forums until you find YOUR flavors. Also keep in mind what is posted ALL OVER THESE FORUMS, as you drop the analogs, your taste buds change and flavors will too. I have traded a bunch of flavors away that tasted either not good, no taste or very bland and the responses on some were like "WOW that is GREAT - gotta order some bottles of that!!!" - Left me stumped! So I decided to stop trading as some of my flavors are already starting to taste better as I reduce analogs and can only wonder what the coming weeks (with no analogs) will be like for flavors on my changing tastebuds. I was phoning with the owner of Perfumers Apprentice yesterday and she told me that many new vapors are mixing 20% flavor into their juices and as they get off analogs they often drop their way down to 5% flavoring with some even finding that too strong for flavor.
I have also stopped buying from any juice vendor that does not post their juice base (PG, VG, mix and/or ratios). My conclusion is that any vendor just posting flavors and mg(s) is either importing or just doesn't want to say what is in their juice (something to hide?).
Be patient, take your time and try not to rush to find the perfect vape. I know it is hard cause we all want the perfect mix to jump off the analogs and who doesn't want more new devices(?!). But I am also finding that I need to patiently listen (and monitor) my body for reactions to e-nic. Some are subtle and most are very different from analog nic and everything changes as I go along. Remember, with analogs, once you have a brand - all remains completely consistent and this is just not so with vaping. Juices change, your taste buds change, different attys with each changing over its life span, batteries and battery levels change, how your body responds can change based on your diet, blood sugar levels, body hydration, and many other variables (and combinations of variables) which do not remain consistent in vaping.
I know this is a long post - sorry - but if a single person gets anything of value it will have been worth the time to write it and read it.
Happy vaping!
