Hi,

I'm new here and posted for a little advice. I've been a smoker since I was 18 and recently my 24 year old Daughter, Emma wants to start smoking but I don't like the idea of her inhaling all the dangerous chemicals in normal cigarettes. If she's serious about smoking, should I lead her towards e-cigarttes instead? I head though they are not recommended for none smokers, is this true? Since she's 24, really she's at a age she can make her own choice, just don't want her unhealthy.

Thanks.

Though I strongly wouldn't suggest starting smoking, the way I see it, is if she is going to do it anyways, get her vaping! When most people get dead set on something, they are most likely going to do it anyways. If she's going to do it, it would be 1000x better for her to start vaping 0mg (or like 6mg at most if it's the nicotine part she wants) than for her to start smoking. Here it seems like a lot of people are quick to jump down the throats of non smokers wanting to vape, which is crazy to me.

For one, if you're an adult, you're free to make whatever decisions concerning your body you want as far as I see it. But if somebody is going to start smoking, why on earth would ANYBODY here encourage them to do so rather than vaping?!?!

BTW: Know that i'm not encouraging your daughter to start vaping either. BUT if she's going to do one of the two, it would be sooooooo much better for her to vape rather than smoke!

She'll do what she wants at that age...unless you hold any leverage. Do you pay her cell phone bill? Car payment? Charge rent?...Exploit those avenues of approach...

If not, I wouldn't suggest she do either.

i vote no on the cigs, and especially no on the vaping. don't think i have to explain any further. if you don't smoke, no reason on gods green earth to start.
You think she shouldn't smoke, but she absolutely not, definitely never ever should vape? It should be the other way around.... She probably shouldn't start vaping, but no freaking way in HELL should she start smoking!

It should be the other way around. A big heck no on smoking and no on vaping. But if she's going to do 1 or the other, I myself would rather it be vaping. IMO

Help her create a simply pros/cons list ON PAPER. Lay out the long-term costs of smoking and vaping. Discuss. Allow her to make her own choice.

I concur with this. Most young people in their 20's have enough experience to make informed decisions, and that's the best any parent can hope for.

Ugg, such a tough choice to make.... My son is 18. Most of my family smokes but my ex-husband and I do not. My son always complained about his grandmother smoking and I was hoping that my kids would be smart enough (with all of the education on topic that is readily available these days) not to smoke. Unfortunately, my son smokes and dips! I could just shake him some days!! lol He says he does it for stress relief. He tried a disposable blu cig recently and hated it. Until he picked that up, I was pretty uneducated on the huge world of ecigs. I'm now seeing that there are so many varieties that perhaps just the blu didn't work for him but some other brand would. I would much rather he not use anything at all, but I would have to say that an e-cig is the lesser of 3 evils??

At the end of the day, we only have so much control once they hit a certain age. I would try to get her to find a healthier avenue for an outlet... like working out... rather than smoking. If she *must* smoke to fit in and be cool, maybe a 0mg vape?

Hey, Emma.

I totally see where you're coming from. Cigarettes aren't the most wonderful things in the world. I'm sure she understands all the risks and factors involved when one decides to start smoking. I'm fairly sure she has already had her first experience, and that's where the addiction sets in. I started smoking at age twelve, I lived in a small town filled with nothing but peer-pressure. It was truly the biggest mistake I had ever made. I am nineteen now and totally off the analogs. Although, I wouldn't recommend a non-smoker to start vaping, if she is really craving the small nicotine high, I would say it's a much better option than smoking cigarettes. I know many people who start vaping just for the fun of it. Most people don't have nicotine in their liquid at all..it's more of a "cool" status I guess.
You're a mother, and mothers will worry. Like you said, she is old enough to make her own choices. The most you can do right now is talk to her. Discuss with her and understand why she wants to take on cigarettes, and let her know about your concerns. In the end, she will make a choice. No matter what though, it was her choice.
I really do wish you the best of luck. I for one would have never wanted to see my daughter smoke, the thought of it makes me sick.
You have my support.
Good luck:)

You can't do anything here but lead by example. There isn't a thing you could say or do that would make a difference if a kid senses a double standard about it. Take it from the son of two smokers.

Although, it might help to show her images of the unsightly aging that smoking can cause.
