I am back, it's been a few years, and I am and ready to get vaping again.

I have the worst luck making the switch. I did it long ago with an ego and Kanger tank. Became very sick and went back on cigarettes due to illness not the vape. As I thought about vaping again, I knew what I didn't want so I went to my BM shop.

They outfitted me with SMOK AL85 with baby beast tank with the installed .4 coil. I have a fear of charging internal batteries so I thought this would be great. I was attracted to the full side button.

I am reading in the forums about using a lower wattage means safer vaping. What I am confused about if I should be using the .6 ohm coil instead of the .04 that came installed in it. I called the vape shop and he said I could dial the .04 down to 45 watts. Is that true?

1. If someone can give me ideas on how to use what size coil to set a lower wattage, yet get a smoother vape where I don't choke and cough with each lung hit, I might get to get going. The shop set me to 60 wattage. I like flavor and not too much heat when I vape. No throat burns.

2. I am seeing lots of reports of trouble with the Beast tanks and that is worrying me. I just want to start vaping and not be fiddling with problems. I may pick up a spare tank. Is there another tank that fits the AL85?

I am not tech savvy at 63 yrs old and just want to vape and get off the stinkies. I do not understand ohms, barely understand wattage. I'm an plug it in kinda gal and walk away. I am amazed right now how much the technology has changed while I have been gone.

Actually I bought the SMOK kit the day before the dentist, so I vaped it one day and got slammed on some pretty bad antibiotics that has had severe side affects for the past 5 days, so I set it down until I can swallow better. One of the side affects is severe persistent sore throat so I'll pick this up when they are done with the surgery. My luck sucks. In the mean time, I am ordering DIY mixing supplies so they will be here when I can pick it up hopefully next week. I will know more tomorrow after I see the endodontist (fingers crossed).

Thanks in advance!

You can dial the Q2 .4 ohm down as low as 40 watts. The Q2 .6 ohm is designed for lower wattages but you wouldn't be able to go up to 60 watts with that one installed - 50 watts is the max. The higher the resistance, the cooler the vape so you might like the .6 a bit more. I doubt there would be a lot of difference between the two at 40 watts but a little difference is sometimes enough. For you to stay off analogs, you have to find your sweet spot. It might take a little experimenting with the different options you have on the coils and the wattages but you will find it.

The Beast tanks are good. There is a leakage issue which in my experience is caused by a warped or unseated top valve - the little white top seal that fits under the top and is what you see when you open it to fill. If the top doesn't slide easily closed, that seal is the problem. The Baby and the Big Baby both come with an extra, so you can rinse off the warped one and let it dry while you use the other one. Press it firmly down around the center opening and fit it in around all of the edges. It takes a few minutes to do but will stop the leaking.

Feel better and congratulations for making it back. It is so worth it.

Another advantage of using the Q2 0.6 ohm coil and running lower wattage would be longer battery life. If you end up vaping much up around 60w a single 18650 battery likely wouldn't make it through a day.

Oh and good luck getting back off stinkies! I'm 63 and smoked 48 years, not no more.

I have the .15 coil installed in that (baby beast), and running at 24 watts. It's a little weak, but it does last a long time on the AL220. The ramp up time is slow, but I don't mind keying up for 3 seconds before I draw. I don't think the baby beast is best for an older person, myself included. I would say what I think is best, but you know, we've all heard opinions before.

Which .15 there are 3 of them for bb/bbb. I suspect the X4 not T8 but could be M2. I like the T8 myself, but no way 24w it's low end rating 50w which I usually run 55-65w these 63 year old 48 years smoking lungs. Yup dialed T8 down to 24w and confirmed, in 5.05sec pull got the barest weak vape . Then again that could be what you are referring to hmm...:glug:

Congrats, welcome back, and I hope you're better soon. I'm recovering from hip replacement surgery (at home now). No matter how uncomfortable we are medically, there isn't a thing that could be made better by smoking. :)

Try this: with the 0.4 installed, back the setting down to about 35w, and try it. Too weak? Ramp it up a few Watts at a time until you go "ahhh..." after a deep draw.

In the baby beast, flavors seem to become more alive after 35w and depending on nic level, seem to be nirvana at ~45-ish. These are "thereabouts" numbers.

With the 0.6 installed, those wattage will give you a cooler vape.

Good luck, enjoy the new technology and have fun doing it.

Wow thank you for such a clear explanation that I actually understand. I have not looked at the parts in the box yet, so I bet you are right about the extra seal. You have me pretty straightened out now. Wonderful!

Yes, the person working in the store explained the fact that I would need to use both batteries in a single day, so I bought two.

What is amazing is it is on, in sleep mode since Saturday and the battery has not discharged at all. I couldn't figure out how to shut it down, and the guy said "you can just leave it on." lol

Oh wow, I just tried it. 35 was good for a starting point for me. 40 was OK but I choked on the second vape of it. I am doing 6ml what the shop sold me. I think I need to go to 3ml when my supplies get in.

Can I run 35 watts on the .04? I need to order some .06 coils the local shop only has .04.

Not yelling. But if I mentioned some other tank, I would get yelled at. I don't like the Baby Beast because it didn't come with an RBA coil. I live remotely, closest place to get coils is over 200 miles. No room for accidentally burning a coil here, everything has to be rebuildable for me.

The beast came with the mod on a road trip. Had a mod break, traveling with only 1 now, so had to get a backup. Needed a dual battery unit, and that's what they had.

Oh I see. I live very urban, closest real city is 60 miles away. Lucky we have little vape shops in small towns, but they are limited.

I am not even ready to begin rebuilding. I would rather stock up via mail order but I am not on the road either.

You seriously can't mention another tank? It's been a long time since I have been here or even thought about vaping. Of course when I did, I had no idea how things have changed. The cloud of smoke is a killer. I was just out on the porch and DH said "Oh the cloud". lol

6mg liquid is what I run on my sub-ohm setups, and I hover around the 40w area too.

I run both the 0.4 and 0.6 coils in my Baby Beasts and 0.5's in my Subtank Minis.

I have a few lower watts, higher resistance setups, too. Those get 12-18mg liquid.

Coils for the Baby Beast typically run about $10 for a five-pack online, but shopping around can get lower. These coils last a while. I've gone through 30-40ml of liquid before one needs looking after.

I'm a month on the same coil, over 200 ml. (Clear, mint flavored liquid.)

As for the tanks, I like the subtank mini or toptank by Kanger. It's just the best for me. I don't need big clouds anymore for normal stuff. I have a dripper if I want that.

Thank you for helping, this is such good information and very useful for starting out. I guess I am off now to go shop some coils. Thanks again!
