Coil Size For Best Flavor?

Hard to be really specific with so many different RTAs / RBAs, but I find a good starting point is to make the coil ID about the same as the size of the air intake. And start with it about that same distance over the intake. If adjustable air, go with the "main" intake size, not how big you can go. (EG on my coppervape skyline clones I use the 2 1/2 mm insert, so use that as the ID for the coil, regardless of how I dial up the adjustable air flow ring.)

Then play around from there :)

You're already pretty high on the PG, which is the primary flavor carrier. Not sure how much change you'll get adjusting that.

Or maybe just need to rewick / dry burn more often? If you've been upping sweeteners (which can mute the flavor all by itself!) then you're probably getting gunk faster too.

I use a 2.5 coil on KFL's, 3.0 on Lemos. Always wondered about the amount of space to leave under the coil. I've heard that can have an effect on flavor, and also on the amount of leakage. I think I normally leave the coil a lot closer to the deck than the coil size. There's a reason I do that. Something I read here many years ago, but I can't remember what it was. Maybe it's time to experiment a bit.

Well, I did say it was a good starting point :) Yep, the particular RTA/RDA geometry comes into play.

Big is one way. I was trying to using an oversized #10 knitting needle as a mandrel for a while with really thin wire. Worked awesome but the coils were so large and the wire so thin that I couldn’t rewick it without pulling everything out of shape. That was for an aromamizer plus which has a gigantic chamber so the thing fit (barely). Seems to be about maximizing surface area and not getting things to hot, both of which say large exotic coils.

I've been losing the flavor at times in my RBA's... I've tried adjusting the amount of flavorings and sweeteners and now I'm thinking about different size coils might help too. Might adjust my PG/VG ratio too. I use 80% PG/20% VG for many years now.
I would suggest putting in a more complex coil geared towards mtl vaping. More surface area. As for the inner diameter, I guess it depends on how much room you have for your wick ends. 2.5mm id normally good for mtl vaping, unless you need more cotton and there is room for a 3mm coil.

I've always used simple 28g kanthal... I will look into this more complex coil.

I currently use vandy vape's dual fused mtl clapton coils, N80. Very happy with them, one coil comes out around 0.7 - 0.74 ohm.

Exotic coils create a coil with more surface area either by giving the resistance metal greater surface area, adding “dead” metal the resistance metal also heats, or both. There are various designs for such given names like “alien coil”, “fused Clapton”, “tiger coil”, or whatnot. Collectively they are called exotic coils. There may be one specialized for MTL.

I found these in my vape stash from years ago... I wonder how it will work?

Looks like a stamped semi mesh coil out of a coil cartridge. If so it might have been designed to have cotton on the outside rather than inside. It might not be of course. GL!

I myself am not a huge fan of plain round wire, Kanthal, especially for mtl. I find that it tends to "toast" your cotton faster. I also find that round wire kanthal takes slightly longer to heat up and cool down. Exotic coils, like the micro mtl aliens gives much better flavour.
For my perfect mtl resistance, I like it around the 0.7 ohm mark, vaping anywhere from 18 to 20 watts.

There used to be a square sectional wire. I don’t know if it’s available anymore though

I bought one of those pie wheel packs and just use whatever I happen to grab randomly. It’s cheap. I tried wrapping exotic coils once out of standard wire. It can be done. Basically you need a fishing swivel, a power drill, and patience. You used to be able to buy pre”braided” exotic wire. I don’t know if you still can.

I have watched many tutorials on building your own exotic coils, too much of a hassle for me though.
But I buy all kinds of exotic coils here. From dual, triple and quad core fused claptons. To framed staple coils and aliens. Works out cheap enough if you buy the mass produced ones from hellvape or vandy vape or wotofo. I gues it all depends on how low you want your build to ohm out.
Sometimes I like it around 0.18 ohm and just take long, flavourful drags with my dead rabbit v3 airflow half closed.

Other times I go around 0.12 ohm and high wattage. Big clouds and warmer vape.

The mass of the coil will determine the heat up / cool down time of the coil. More metal, takes longer both ways. Doesn't matter what kind of resistance wire or it's shape. More metal takes longer.
