I have 3 cats and one dog currently, and I have had both cats and dogs my whole life.
Cats win.
For me, there's something about their dichotomous nature that just gets me. Smoochy belly rubs one minute, murder the next.

How much do cats actually kill? [Infographic] - The Oatmeal

and while I'm at it, this.

I've lived with cats my whole life (usually two at a time). I consider myself an animal person, but the kittehs are the best.

Meet Maeby. She's ridiculous.

She's a rescue and we bonded instantly. She's the most gentle animal I've ever encountered.

Conversely, meet my sister's cat Pearl. She's also ridiculous, and an absolute terror. She's pretty awesome too though.

You forgot another excellent quality of cats -- they're quiet! (mostly!) There ARE exceptions... but mostly they don't make noise.

This is Tuxie, just a few weeks after she turned up in our carport in the summer of 2011, being babied by my son:

The next spring, she showed us one of the exceptions to the general quietness of cats, when she went into heat. This is right after her spaying, still wearing the cone -- a friend of mine said the expression on her cute little face seems to be saying "Just. WAIT." :D

This is from 2014, that silly "PV Picture Game" that ran for a while... hence my mod sitting right beside my very surprised cat:

And this was earlier this year, back in the winter, her fat self perched on the top of the couch, clearly not pleased with being awakened just so I could flash a bright light in her eyes: :D

I had four kitties at one time. Debit, she was my "Clinically Depressed" and pretty much always had a "Go to Hell" look on her face. She was the eldest and kind of the mama to the later arrivals.

Tilley, she's ADD and a diva. She's adopted the "Go to Hell" look from Debit. She's still kicking (and still hates the "Big Dumb Dog")

Then there was Scooter. I swear he was human. (Lost him in a "divorce" about 5 years ago, so I don't know where or how he is.) He taught *ME* to play fetch. Big orange and white tabby who would often crawl into my lap and lay his paws and head on my shoulder like he was hugging me.

Lastly, there was Lucky (SOB) (a.k.a. Chumley, a.k.a. Bubba) He, like Scooter, was a "car engine compartment" rescue. Where Scooter was unscathed by his 30 mile trip, Bubba was all beat up. Scratches, cut lip, and very likely brain damage because he was my "Special Needs" kitty. Terrified of humans for the first year of his life, but once he acclimated, he wouldn't leave you alone. He'd headbutt you to get you to pet him. Had to put him down last fall :(

"Big Dumb Dog" - she's a Pippid (Part Pit, Part stupid.) The ONLY thing that has saved her is that she's cute. I'm not a dog person, but my better half brought her into my life....

I prefer cats - WAAAAAAY easier to deal with (and if we want to go away for a couple of days, don't have to find a pet-sitter....)

There's a reason cats are number 1 YouTube video in animal category. They are just so darn fun to watch. I've been mostly dog owner, but several years ago my bestest friend Thunder (black lab) died of old age. I said Never Again will I go thru that pain of losing a pet. But about 5 yrs later I got kind of lonely and went down to a nice pet adoption center and met a 6 mo old girl cat I named Stealth. Cuz what cat do you know that does NOT use stealth in every day life? Plus she is black, therefore invisible at night. We got acquainted for a couple years and I could tell that I just wasn't the right "toy" for her lol. So back to the adoption center I went. Looking for a live toy for my Stealth. Came upon a tiny thing I call Loco. That's him lurking. I didn't know squat about introducing cats, so kept apart for a few hours. Then I said heck with it. This scrappy little guy will just have to watch his back. I need not worry!! There were best friends from the get go. So lucky in that regard. I watch that show called "My Cat From Hell". And I just count my blessings! Loco plays fetch, and begs me to bring him grass from the yard to eat. Stealth just wants to cuddle and drools on me when she is at her happiest.

Thanks for starting this thread. I've enjoyed reading all the stories.

I'm away from home waiting for a badly broken ankle to heal, so I don't have access to my best pictures right now. Or the cats (and dog) either. :(

Somewhere I have a series of pictures taken one night when I came into the living room and each of the three cats and the dog was in possession of a separate piece of upholstered furniture. Captioned asking why a person on their own kept needing more furniture. :D

In the meantime, here are all three cats checking out my new mattress - they approved, and even allow me a little space too.

Well :censored:, I can't even do that from my tablet. I can't drag and drop, and when I try to upload file it says that it's too big. I'll have to come back again in three weeks. In the meantime, trust me, all three are large and, of course, adorable.

I have 3 cats all live outside. 2 are strays that their momma had in one of my sheds and then she got killed? They cam out one day begging for some of my sandwitch I was eating, little furballs were hungry. I fed them and the rest is history. They are now about 12 years old and hang out with me when I am outside. The third one a granddaughter asked me to keep while they moved. That was 5 years ago....
I run off other strays with a paintball gun, if not I would be covered up and my cats would get hurt fighting with them. All my cats are "fixed".

I love animals, furried, feathered, scaly, and insects too.

If I had to pick just one animal allowed to kept as a pet, Id have to choose a cat. Rodents( rabbits, etc ) are hard for me to keep as their urine is awful. Most of the other exotics such as insect, reptiles, etc, are not cuddly for the most part, Bearded dragons are very nice.

Cats on the whole are so self sufficient. Since they are independent the downside is just because you like them, doesnt mean they will "like" YOU.

That being said, one tends to tell oneself that we are special because a cat chose to stay with you.

When ever I hear of someone "losing" their cat, I immediately think "they are not lost" THEY decided to find another place to live. This doesnt mean that you did anything wrong, just that we did not do anything "right" enough to keep them around.

Except the fact that living with dogs is like having a toddler that never grows up and needs to be walked, fed, exercised and doted on, they are every bit as fun, and loyal.

Everyone loves a kitten, but they unfortunately turn in to Cats. Its a toss of the dice if that cat is a "good cat" for us. One really has to be a very different person to live with cats. It takes a person that is patient and very forgiving and confident. If we are lucky they just sort of tolerate us and give us joy in the occasional look of approval or nuzzle.

If we are really lucky we have a companion that lavishes their affection and attention on us. Sleeps on us, uses us as a scratching post and bed.

Cat person here for sure. I am a foster and get cats out of the shelter that are due to be euthanized and then myself and friend raise money to spay/neuter and then find an official Rescue to take. At this very moment I have three in my garage chilling in a cage with a hammock and toys.

A momma and a single 5 week old baby in a spare bathroom that keeps me distracted from any work I am supposed to be doing
