Great post @stols001 I am glad that someone that had to struggle to quit posted what it took to help them make the switch.

One clarification though, if I may.
If you are supremely frustrated I'd suggest nic salts (same kind of nicotine found in tobacco)
I am pretty sure all of the liquid nicotine we use is the same kind of nicotine found in cigarettes. nic salt nicotine is just nicotine treated with citric or some other kind of acid to smooth out the taste. I am thinking the reason for using nic salt nicotine is to be able to vape at a much higher nic level and still maintain the smooth taste. I admit that I could be wrong but that is what I have gathered from the various post I have followed on the subject.

Thanks for the clarification, mattiem :) I think you are correct, after poking around a bit on line, I did see their main purpose was for "higher" nic percentages without a deathly throat hit, though I did read somewhere that they are more bioavailable and quickly absorbed into the bloodstream, so more similar to cigs in that regard.

I stopped reading after that since I want to maintain my placebo effect (if there is one :) )

But thanks for the clarification, it actually makes me feel better about vaping them, and I do use only about 18% nicotine when DIY, I am not the biggest fan of a throat hit these days (2--3 ppd with pneumonia on and off and barely able to speak as so hoarse will kinda do that... For me... For about 18 months).

You know, OP, I failed at vaping and didn't even truly want to quit until THIS quit and vaping WAS much easier with the right motivation, but I don't think I would have wanted to go too far further down the health rabbit hole, so I'm really glad vaping (and this site) were here for me to (re)discover/discover.

oops, I hope I didn't put a damper on your bubble

You are very welcome. 1.8% sounds about right for someone just coming off smokes and for some it is a good maintenance level. I have read where some folks needed 2.4% or 3.6% to keep the beast at bay so I am very happy that nic salts are there for them and for you specifically. It sounds like your health problem were horrific.

I believe that Nicotine Salts were developed to Increase the amount of Nicotine that the Body Absorbs.

Being Less Harsh is Subjective. And might have been a "Added Benefit" to some.

It seem there is more to nic salts than can be seen from a casual glance. I am just happy that they are there for the folks that need them.

I actually made my own and can vape it at 14 mg (1.4%). My 14 mg nic salt is smoother than my 10mg regular nic.

Nic salts reduce the alkali effect that nic has. This does tend to make it smoother, especially at high concentrations. But I think the effects depend much on what acid is being used to form the salt.

Juul does have a patent that claims (among other things) faster absorption with their specific formula, which is based on benzoic acid. This seems a bit counter-intuitive, since the nic in tobacco is pretty much all in a salt form and the tobacco companies add ammonia to free it from the salts (and thereby speed absorption) while the regular ("no salt") nic base used for e-liquid is all free-base to begin with.

I thought nic salts were the result of the freebasing process. Add an acid to a base (i.e., an alkaloid) and the reaction produces a Carbon gas, water and a salt precipitate.

But then, I studied economics and poli sci so I didn't have to remember chemistry and electrical stuff like Ohm's Law.

For me to quit smoking I had to decide for myself to quit cold turkey and used the Cig-A-Likes to get me passed the two weeks it takes for the thousands of addictive chemicals in cigarettes to get out of my body. It was hard and it was physically painful but it can be done. You just need to make the decision for yourself that you will stick it out an suffer through it. 3 years the end of this month for me without a killer stick!

First off i'd say get rid of any negative attitude you either want to quit or you don't
secondly, like someone else posted the first thing i did was finding that ONE flavor that makes you want to vape more than smoke (for me it was fruity flavors or more specificly watermelon/strawberries)
No one quits the same and even though vaping went a long way it's still not a one size fits all thing some will stop with vaping some won't. I dual used for at least 2 weeks before commiting 100% to vaping (mostly for that morning smoke with a coffee) I tried ego styles and it did 0 for me not enough vapor not enough taste so i went higher budget and look at me now 3 months in and i can't even stand near smokers anymore lol.

The hardest thing to do when you first start vaping is finding what works for YOU dosen't matter what everyone says they used or use right now, it still dosen't mean you're gonna make it with the same. Get a variable wattage mod and choose a tank (wether mtl or d.l.i / above or sub 0hm) THEN choose a flavor carefully get something that'll make you want to keep vaping like i said instead of smoking then it's finding the right way to stop smoking either dual use or commit 100% from the start. There's no right or wrong it's a matter of trials and errors

When I started the process of quitting, I went to organic tobacco ciggies with no additives. I think that made it slightly easier. I also didn't have a planned quit date, I just got a vape and used it while driving/etc. It was easy for me as I had plans to quit smoking for many years.

My Ex G/F was a night owl alcoholic. It took forever to get her in bed and to stay there. It was hard to sleep if she was passed out outside in a chair, or unconscious on the kitchen floor. One night, I finally got her to go to bed, and I wake up at 4a and she's gone again. I look in the front room and she's passed out in the recliner.

I got her and walked her back to the bedroom and asked what happened... "You went to sleep then covered me in lung cookies." That was a good enough reason to quit for me. I really cared a lot about her.

After quitting for a while, I decided that I needed a more intelligent partner and dumped her since my activity level increased so much. (I still care about her, but I can't be around her, can't talk to her unless I'm drunk.)

Just do whatever you have to do. It's different for everyone.
