I go down in diameter when I go down on vg and up in pg in my liquid. For 50/50 I use 1.8mm. For my homebrew 93% vg I use 2.4mm or bigger.

I like to go big (5mm +) on twisted kanthal. That way I can still get 0.7-1.2 ohms at which I like to vape at. The surface area is just immense with 4 strands twisted 28 awg kanthal wrapped 7-8 times around 8mm drill bit. Its just big, but with variable wattage, it works fine. (Takes a while to cool down though)

When I build a coil for my kayfun, I use a fairly large 7/64" (2.8mm) drill bit.

I need a large diameter in order to pull a double piece of silica or cotton yarn through the coil for the wick.

Obviously, this wick is way too long and will now need to be shortened

I think the biggest difference in the coil size is wicking - you can fit more wick in a bigger coil. When I'm using something like a Kayfun with a tighter draw and lower power settings, I build smaller coils (3/32" is my go-to kayfun coil), but on the Lemo I use at higher wattage, I use 1/8", and the one that came on it was even bigger than that.
