I posted this in the general e-liquid forum, but after hanging out in here I think this is probably a better forum for my question. You guys seem to be more in tune with various flavor notes. I am ready to begin DIY because I think I will be better able to control individual factors in a juice.

So here's the problem- I have found what I perceive to be a lipstick/chapstick flavor on the exhale that I despise in some juices. Hubby either doesn't taste it or doesn't think it's unpleasant. I have found this flavor in fruit flavors from madvapes and from gourmet vapes. I don't taste it in other flavors from these same vendors. Initially I would have assumed that I just don't like the fruit flavors in e liquid. Then I tried some apple pie from velvet vapors that I LOVE. It doesn't have the nasty exhale flavor.

If I had to describe the exhale flavor, I would say that it tastes like lipbalm made for little girls in lots of flavors. Waxy maybe? I do not notice this flavor on the inhale at all.

I think the flavor I am trying to avoid is coming from the flavoring for the following reasons:
1) all my juices are either 100% PG or 80/20 PG/VG
2) I like non-fruit flavors from the vendors that have the nasty fruit exhale flavor
3) I finally got a fruit flavor that I liked from a different vendor (velvet vapors)

So here are the questions. BTW, thanks for reading so far through my mini-novel!

1) Does anyone know which flavoring agents are used by madvapes and gourmet vapors? Are the possibly the same? If so, this would probably be a good flavoring agent to avoid.

2) Does anyone know which flavoring agents are used by velvet vapors? If so, these might be a good place for me to start (unless they are the same as the ones used madvapes and gourmet vapors which means I have a different problem).

3) Does anyone know what I am tasting? If so, this would probably help me avoid it in future DIY endeavors.

Thanks for any help you may offer. If I'm missing something in the vapor equation that could be causing my problem, please let me know that as well!

While I know a few things about flavoring and making vapor "feel" a certain way, I have not purchased premixed juice in about a year and am completely unfamiliar with the vendors you mention.

As noted above, it could be the base. It could also be EM. It might be another flavoring component too. (Like a very slight touch of cinnamon gives me a bubbly kind of feel without any cinnamon taste, but others have said they can taste it, but not feel it the way I do.). Without actually tasting it myself, I would just be guessing. Even with tasting it myself I could just be left with guessing as I am far from knowing everything. I still surprise myself with mixes.

The best way to find out what it is is to do some mixing yourself. Once you find the same effect, it will be easy for you to go through your notes and find which component did it as compared to the juice you mixed that does not have that annoying effect to you.

I think some have described what you taste as being "soapy" I have tasted hints of it it myself in a couple of pre-mix fruit flavors from some vendors. Don't recall if they were Mad Vapes, Gourmet Vapor or who for sure though. Its been quite awhile. Never noticed it in my DIY unflavored base mixes. Just recently I mixed up a 5mL 75/25 9mg batch using 10% plain Raspberry Extract from either TPA or FA. I have both in identical bottles so not sure. It had the same slightly soapy taste along with the raspberry. I added about 5 drops each of vanilla and walnut flavoring and the taste was almost gone. I let it steep for a week and it seemed to have gone completely. Pretty decent tasting vape too by the way. I don't usually make fruit flavors so don't have any other flavors to other than FA and TPA Apple. Haven't noticed this soapy taste in either of those.

Just a guess but I doubt if commercial liquid suppliers will divulge their ingredients to anyone.

Thanks for the replies. It seems as though I will just need to jump into DIY and hope that I don't run into the aftertaste or that if I do I can easily isolate it.

I also like the idea of adding some caramel or vanilla to the ones I already have to see if that will cover the taste. Obviously this isnt the best choice, but I'm cheap so I want to figure out how to finish what I've already got (or just let hubby finish it!).

I feel like this would be more likely to happen in perfumers apprentice flavors or something of that nature? i have a few soap flavors too that I had to just throw away. BLECH
